Bob Jenkins, longtime Indy 500 broadcaster, announces battle with brain cancer

Bob Jenkins, the longtime Indy 500 broadcaster who has been around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for more than 40 years, will reduce his role around the Greatest Spectacle in Racing after being diagnosed with brain cancer, the track announced Tuesday.

Jenkins first appeared on the IMS Radio Network for the 500 in 1979, and then, while working in television, became "The Voice of the 500" from 1990 to 1998. In recent years, he's been an announcer for the race on the IMS PA.

This May, Jenkins said he still plans to be around the track during the two-week lead-up to the race, but is stepping back his official role due to his cancer battle.
