Nine incredible stats behind Man City’s imperious 20-match winning streak

Manchester City maintained their firm grip on the top spot of the Premier League table with a 2-1 win over West Ham, which saw them move 13 points ahead of Leicester and Manchester United.

Remarkably, Pep Guardiola’s men have now won their last 14 league matches, and 20 in all competitions, which has seen talk of a potential quadruple grow louder by the week.

We’ve collected nine of the standout statistics from this recent record-breaking run, and if you fancy Manchester City to set a new world record for wins.

– Before West Ham’s Michail Antonio scored on Saturday, City had gone 18.5 hours without conceding a goal at The Etihad. That’s longer than all six Lord Of The Rings and all Hobbit films combined.

– John Stones and Ruben Dias have started 16 games together this season. Over those games, City have conceded three goals, while the two defenders have scored five.

– City have taken the lead in 19 of the 20 matches during this winning streak. The only side to have gone ahead against them during this run was League Two side Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup fourth round; City scored three times in the last 10 minutes to win 3-1.

– The aggregate scoreline over this 20-match run is 42-7 to City.

– Not once over this run have they conceded more than one goal, a record that also stretches back 27 games to the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham in November. They’ve kept 19 clean sheets and shipped just eight goals conceded over the full unbeaten run to date.

– Kevin De Bruyne now finds himself joint with Harry Kane at the top of the Premier League assists chart in 2020-21 with 11. Last season he registered 20 – seven more than any other player.

– The win over West Ham was Guardiola’s 200th win in charge of City. No manager in the history of English football has reached that milestone quicker. It was also the 500th win over his managerial career.

– This is the longest winning streak in English football history. The previous record was 17 games from George Graham’s Arsenal back in 1987.

– There has been some dispute over which team holds the run in terms of the world record of a winning streak in all competitions.

Brazilian outfit Coritiba claimed it with 25 wins, but the record is widely recognised as being set by Johan Cruyff’s Ajax, with 26 wins back in 1972, while Louis van Gaal’s side of 1995-96 fell one short of equalling it.

Welsh side The New Saints and Scottish fifth-tier side East Kilbride have both since broken that record, but in terms of an all-time top-level world record, City need eight more to break Ajax’s record.
