Dodgers' Corey Seager Suffers Broken Hand After Being HBP; Won't Need Surgery

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager will be placed on the injured list and is expected to miss at least four weeks after suffering a fractured right hand.  

Manager Dave Roberts told reporters Sunday that Seager won't need surgery on the injury and that Gavin Lux will make the majority of the starts at shortstop in his absence.

Seager was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning of Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins and was quickly replaced in the lineup by Sheldon Neuse.

Injuries have been a bit of a problem for Seager during his career, including missing some time in 2020 because of a back injury.

He was notably out for the majority of 2018 after Tommy John surgery and has only once topped 150 games in a season. It's enough to create some concern any time the player is forced to miss action.

The Dodgers also want him on the field because of the impact he has at the plate.

Seager entered the day with a .265 batting average, four home runs and seven doubles in 37 appearances so far this season.

The 27-year-old is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, hitting .307 with a .943 OPS and 15 home runs in just 52 games.

His production picked up even more in the postseason, helping the Dodgers win the title after earning both NLCS MVP and World Series MVP. He hit five home runs during the NLCS win over the Atlanta Braves before posting a .400 batting average in the World Series win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Los Angeles clearly wants a player of this ability back on the field as soon as possible, but Lux and Chris Taylor can fill in until the starter returns.
