Philadelphia 76ers executive Daryl Morey fined $75,000 for violating NBA's anti-tampering rule

The NBA fined Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operation Daryl Morey – again.

On Monday, the league announced it penalized Morey $75,000 “for violating the league’s anti-tampering rule. The fine is in response to a social media post Morey made June 3 regarding the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry.”

The NBA also fined the Sixers $75,000 for Morey’s conduct.

Morey’s offending tweet was in response to an Instagram post by Steph Curry after his brother, Seth, scored 30 points in Philadelphia’s Game 5 close-out victory against Washington.

Steph wrote, “Aye you @sdotcurry …. you killed tonight.”

On Twitter, Morey responded with a screengrab of Steph Curry’s post and wrote, “join ’em.”

When Twitter users suggested Morey tampered, he responded, “My goodness folks I am talking about the fact that we are thrilled @sdotcurry is with the @sixers – nothing else!”

On Dec. 28, the NBA fined Morey $50,000 “for violating the league’s anti-tampering rule. The fine is in response to a since-deleted social media post Morey made on December 20 regarding the Houston Rockets’ James Harden.”

Morey’s social media activity has cost him. His pro-Hong Kong tweet during the 2019-20 preseason led to a fallout with China. It took a full year before China’s state-sponsored CCTV began broadcasting NBA games again and the league lost nearly $400 million.

The league has taken stronger action regarding tampering over the past two years. The NBA passed stricter anti-tampering rules at the start of the 2019-20 season, and it fined Golden State's Draymond Green $50,000 in August for violating the rule after his comments about Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker during the restart in Orlando.
