Stephen Curry, Warriors agree on four-year, $215 million contract extension, per report

The extension will keep Curry with the Warriors through 2026

As 2021 free agency continues to roll along at full speed, the Golden State Warriors will be quite busy as they look to make some additions that will get them back into title contention. At the same time, they'll also be thinking ahead and are set to get a head start on next summer's business.

The Warriors agreed to a four-year, $215 million extension with Steph Curry, according to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein. Curry's current deal will expire next summer, which means this extension will kick in at the start of the 2022-23 season and keep him in the Bay Area through 2026.

After missing nearly all of 2019-20 due to a broken hand, Curry returned last season and was an MVP candidate once again. While he didn't win the award for a third time, he did put up one of the best seasons of his career. His 32 points per game were good for a career-high and the second scoring title of his career, and he added 5.5 rebound and 5.8 assists while shooting 42.1 percent from 3-point land.

With Klay Thompson once again sidelined, Curry's brilliance almost singlehandedly kept a shorthanded Warriors team in the playoff race. They finished 39-33, which was good for ninth in the Western Conference and earned them a trip to the play-in tournament. There, they nearly upset the Los Angeles Lakers and eventually crashed out with a disappointing loss at home to the Memphis Grizzlies.

It wasn't for lack of trying from Curry, however, as he put up 39 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals in their season-ending overtime loss. In the 47 minutes he was on the floor, they outscored the Grizzlies by four, but were outscored by nine in the eight minutes he sat.

As that game, and really the whole season showed, Curry is still one of the best players in the world, but he needs some help. Thompson's return will be a big boost, but the Warriors will also need to make some other additions, whether through trade or free agency. With Curry locked up for the rest of his prime, though, they're guaranteed to be in the mix.
