Nick Foles addresses Colts trade speculation, expresses admiration for Frank Reich

Nick Foles sees an opportunity. He just can't come right out and say it, but he isn't subtle here.

Foles is the Chicago Bears' third-string quarterback behind Andy Dalton and Justin Fields. But he has a history of stepping in in a pinch and succeeding.

Foles came on for an injured Carson Wentz for the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles and wound up winning the Super Bowl. Frank Reich was the Eagles' offensive coordinator that season.

Now it's 2021. Wentz is injured and Reich is the Indianapolis Colts coach.

So what is Foles supposed to think?

Here's what he had to say Monday after the Colts announced Wentz would be out at least five weeks after foot surgery.

"Frank Reich is one my favorite, if not the favorite, coaches of all time," Foles said. "He understands me as a player. He understands me as a person.

"I haven't had any talks with them. I'm a Chicago Bear right now."

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich talks with Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles (7) before an NFL football game, Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019, in Indianapolis.

But ...

"You all watched the 2017 season and the playoffs, where he changed the offense and built it around me, and we saw what happened."

Foles passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns — and caught a touchdown pass — in that Super Bowl win over New England.

Foles played for Jacksonville in 2019 and Chicago in 2020, starting late in the season after Mitchell Trubisky got injured. The Bears have since signed Dalton and drafted Fields in the first round.

The Colts traded for Wentz in the offseason after he was benched by the Eagles late in the 2020 season. He suffered a left foot injury in a training camp practice last week.
