Bills’ Josh Allen agrees to 6-year extension for reportedly $258 million

The Buffalo Bills believe in the growth quarterback Josh Allen showed last season. The team locked up Allen on Friday, signing him to a massive six-year extension.

Allen, 25, can make $258 million over the course of the deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The deal will pay Allen at least $150 million guaranteed.

Allen emerged as a future superstar in 2020. He completed 69.2 percent of his passes, threw for 4,544 yards and 37 touchdowns. All those figures represented career highs for Allen, who also made the Pro Bowl for the first time.

It was a massive step up for Allen, who struggled as a rookie and showed minimal gains during his second season. Prior to his 2020 breakout, Allen had a 56.3 completion percentage and a 30 to 21 touchdown to interception ratio over his career.

While Allen showed potential during his second year, it's tough to overstate how much he improved in 2020. Allen came into the NFL with a rocket arm and strong mobility, but his biggest knocks as a passer were his accuracy and decision making.

Both of those problem areas turned into strengths in Year 3. Allen showed one of the biggest increases in deep ball accuracy last season, and his 1.7 interception rate was a career low.

Bills looking for Super Bowl with Josh Allen

With Allen establishing himself as one of the best young passers in the league, it's up to the Bills to give him a Super Bowl-worthy supporting cast. The team made massive strides in that area last offseason, picking up wideout Stefon Diggs in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings. Diggs was a first-team All-Pro in his first season in Buffalo.

The Bills gave Allen another weapon this offseason, bringing in veteran wideout Emmanuel Sanders. The team also kept key members of its defense, re-signing Matt Milano and Daryl Williams.

Getting past Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will still be a difficult task, but the Bills are setting themselves up to be perennial Super Bowl contenders with Allen locked up for the next few seasons.
