The Kansas City Chiefs fell to 1-2 on Sunday with their 30-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, but they are reportedly making an addition which could end up helping the offense in a big way. On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Chiefs plan to sign the recently reinstated Josh Gordon.

Just days ago, it was reported that the NFL had told the troubled wide receiver that he would be reinstated, and could be back on the playing field by Week 4. Gordon applied for reinstatement to the league in July. He was suspended in December 2019 for violating the league's substance abuse and performance-enhancing drug policies -- Gordon's fifth violation of the league's drug policy. Now, he gets yet another chance.

According to Schefter, Gordon is traveling to Kansas City on Monday with the expectations of signing with the Chiefs' practice squad. Schefter reports that Gordon had multiple teams contact him about potentially signing, but his agents, Eric Dounn and Matt Leist from LAA Sports, said that Kansas City is attractive because it could be a "long-term stop."

Gordon has played a full 16-game season just once, as a rookie back in 2012. His second season in the NFL was special, as he caught 87 passes for a league-leading 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns in just 14 games. He was never able to build off of that All-Pro campaign, however, as off-field issues started to pile up. He was suspended for 10 games in 2014 for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, and then suspended for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. He would play just six more games for Cleveland before being traded to the New England Patriots in 2018.

It appeared Gordon had gotten back on the right track in New England, as he caught 40 passes for 720 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games played in 2018. However, in December he announced he was stepping away from the field, and then it was reported that he had been suspended indefinitely for again violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Gordon was reinstated before the 2019 regular season, and played in six games before injuring his knee. He was later waived from IR, and landed with the Seattle Seahawks. Gordon played five games for them before being suspended yet again.

The Chiefs poked around the free agent market for a starting wide receiver this offseason, and reportedly targeted Josh Reynolds and JuJu Smith-Schuster. They missed on both, however, and rolled into the new season with familiar faces in Mecole Hardman, Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson.

Gordon is now 30, but he's been able to make an impact on the field wherever he's gone. The problem of course is that he's been unable to stay on the field due to his various missteps, but Andy Reid is taking a shot. The Chiefs saw an opportunity to grab an immediate-impact player in Gordon, and they went for it.
