However, Sheriff sent the Bernabeu silent after Jasurbek Yakhshiboev opened the scoring with a header in Madrid.
Real Madrid's in-form striker Karim Benzema then made history after scoring from the spot to equalise.
The goal marked the Frenchman's 17th consecutive season he has scored in the Champions League.
However, the biggest drama of the group stage was about to arrive.
Some staunch defending and goalkeeping kept Madrid at bay.
Then, in the 89th minute, a rare Sheriff attack ended with Sebastien Thill thrashed a shot into the net from the edge of the area.
The goal sparked wild celebrations from the Moldovan side.
The football world was also left in disbelief at the loss.
