Real Madrid have suffered one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history after falling 2-1 at home to debutants Sheriff in the second group state match.

Madrid were expected to put the Moldovan side, formed in 1997, away having defeated Inter Milan 1-0 in the first group stage match.

However, Sheriff sent the Bernabeu silent after Jasurbek Yakhshiboev opened the scoring with a header in Madrid.

Real Madrid's in-form striker Karim Benzema then made history after scoring from the spot to equalise.

The goal marked the Frenchman's 17th consecutive season he has scored in the Champions League.

However, the biggest drama of the group stage was about to arrive.

Some staunch defending and goalkeeping kept Madrid at bay.

Then, in the 89th minute, a rare Sheriff attack ended with Sebastien Thill thrashed a shot into the net from the edge of the area.

The goal sparked wild celebrations from the Moldovan side.

The football world was also left in disbelief at the loss.

Lionel Messi scores for PSG

Lionel Messi opened his account for PSG with the best performance of the season since his summer move from Barcelona as his new club defeated Manchester City 2-0.

Having under-performed since his move to the French capital, Messi saved his opening goal for when it mattered most.

Messi's 121st Champions League goal came after a trademark driving run forward from inside his own-half, followed by a one-two with Kylian Mbappe.

The Argentine slotted the ball from the top of the box to cement PSG's win against the champions of England.

PSG had taken the lead through a less-expected source, Idrissa Gana Gueye scoring with a powerful finish after eight minutes.

With Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva both hitting the bar within the space of a few seconds midway through the first half, and Gianluigo Donnarumma in fine form, City were unable to reply.
