The Toronto Blue Jays made an offseason splash Tuesday, signing right-hander José Berríos to a massive contract extension, CBS Sports HQ's Jim Bowden confirmed. Berríos' deal is for seven years and $131 million, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.

Berríos initially joined the Blue Jays at July's trade deadline from the Twins. In 12 starts with Toronto, the two-time All-Star had a 3.58 ERA (123 ERA+) in 70 1/3 innings. Berríos was previously under team control through the 2022 season.

For his career, Berríos owns an ERA+ of 108, and over that last three seasons he has an ERA+ of 120 with a K/BB ratio of 3.83. Berríos has also been quite healthy in his career. He's never been on the injured list in his big league career, and he's worked at least 192 innings in three of the last four seasons. The only exception is the abbreviated 2020 season, in which he still pitched a qualifying number of innings.

Right now, Berríos would slot in at the front of a Toronto rotation that also includes Hyun-Jin Ryu, Alek Manoah, Ross Stripling, and Nate Pearson. If the Jays are able to re-up with 2021 ace and Cy Young finalist Robbie Ray, then Berríos would become a particularly strong No. 2 man.

Berrios, 27, has spent six seasons in the majors after debuting with the Twins in 2016. He helped the Jays push for a playoff spot in 2021, though Toronto came up just short of the postseason in the ultra-competitive AL East despite winning 91 games. The nine-figure investment in Berríos broadly signals that the Blue Jays remain committed to fortifying the roster during their current window of contention.
