Quarterback Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers regained their championship form and got back into the win column Monday night.

Brady threw two touchdown passes, and the Buccaneers ended a two-game losing steak by beating the New York Giants, <a href="http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/boxscore.asp?gamecode=20211122027&home=27&vis=19&final=true" target=_blank>30-10</a>, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

“Every day that goes by is closer to the end of the season,” Brady said in his postgame news conference. “And every game is more important because there’s fewer of them, and you don’t get them back. We’re at a decent point. But we can play a lot better than we’ve played. …There’s a lot to learn from. I’m hoping our best football is ahead of us.”

If there’s going to be a late-season push toward a second straight Super Bowl title for Brady and the Bucs, it’s about time for it to get started. There were encouraging signs Monday.

“We executed a little bit better,” Brady told ESPN immediately afterward. “Still left a few out there, I thought. But better. We’ve been playing better at home. So [it’s a] good win for our team. Obviously losing two straight, that really sucks in the NFL. But I’m glad it’s not three straight. I’m glad we won. And we’ve got a real short week going up against a really good football team in Indy on Sunday.”

Brady completed 30 of 46 passes for 307 yards. He threw touchdown passes to wide receivers Chris Godwin and Mike Evans.

“We were real desperate to get a win today,” Evans said, “and happy we got it.”

Evans became the franchise’s career leader in touchdowns with 72. Tight end Rob Gronkowski returned to the lineup from his latest injury-related absence and contributed six catches for 71 yards.

“It was just good to be back out there with the guys. … It felt really good,” Gronkowski said. “It felt good to make some plays, get some first downs to help out the team. Just overall, I think it went pretty solid.”

Tailback Ronald Jones had a touchdown run, and kicker Ryan Succop added three field goals. The defense played well and forced three turnovers by the Giants as Tampa Bay improved to 7-3.

“That Thanksgiving turkey is going to taste a hell of a lot better,” Coach Bruce Arians <a href="https://twitter.com/Buccaneers/status/1463001263897993217" target=_blank>said</a>. “I don’t drink wine, or I would. That would taste pretty good, too.”

The defending champs, with their two straight losses sandwiched around their bye week, had last won a game on Oct. 24.

“It was long,” Brady said in his televised postgame interview. “Lot of bad night’s sleep. But that’s part of just playing football. It’s football. It’s a tough sport. Every year has its different challenges. You’ve seen this year a lot of crazy things happen with games. An old coach of mine used to say, ‘It’s not who you play. It’s how you play when you play them.’ So we’ve played some good teams that are playing well. And we’ve got a tough one coming up Sunday.”

The Buccaneers’ most recent defeat, eight days earlier at FedEx Field, had been particularly galling. They’d pulled within 23-19 in the fourth quarter on Brady’s touchdown pass to Evans, only to watch their defense allow the Washington Football Team to hold the ball for 19 plays and nearly 10½ minutes on an 80-yard touchdown drive. <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/11/14/wft-upsets-buccaneers/" target=_blank>The Bucs lost, 29-19</a>.

They will need to recapture their late-season magic from a year ago if they are to have a chance to repeat. Last season, the Buccaneers were 7-5 after a Nov. 29 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. They looked nothing like a Super Bowl team. They’d lost twice to the New Orleans Saints. <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/10/08/bears-buccaneers-score-live-updates/" target=_blank>Brady had lost track of the downs</a> in a defeat to the Chicago Bears. But those Buccaneers didn’t lose again, winning their final four regular season games and running the table in the postseason on their way to their <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/02/07/bucs-win-super-bowl/" target=_blank>Super Bowl triumph over the Chiefs</a>.

“I think we’ve got a long way to go … seven games left,” Brady said Monday. “So there’s a lot of football left. Thanksgiving’s coming up. The games are bigger because there are fewer of them. And we’ve put ourselves in a decent position. But we’ve got to keep going.”

Brady even had a 10-yard run on a scramble against the Giants, although he seemed convinced during his postgame news conference <a href="https://twitter.com/Buccaneers/status/1463003122045833217" target=_blank>that he’d traveled further</a>.

“Eleven-yard run,” he said. “They don’t happen very often so I do remember how far they go. So that was pretty good.”

Brady did throw his fifth interception in the past three games when Evans mishandled the ball on a screen pass. That led to a tipped-pass interception for Giants cornerback Adoree’ Jackson. The Giants stayed in the game in the first half. They pulled even at 10 on a gadget-play touchdown pass from quarterback Daniel Jones to left tackle Andrew Thomas, who reported as an eligible receiver and made a leaping catch in the end zone. But the Buccaneers scored 20 unanswered points from there.

Jones threw two interceptions. One of them went to Steve McLendon, a 310-pound veteran defensive tackle for the Buccaneers who made his first NFL pick. According to the NFL’s research department, it was the first time in league history that a 300-pound player had a touchdown catch and a 300-pound player had an interception in the same game.

Giants tailback Saquon Barkley made modest contributions in his return after missing four games with an ankle injury, with 25 rushing yards and 31 receiving yards. The Giants fell to 3-7.

It all was enough for Brady to finish the game on the bench with the outcome well in hand, as backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert took the final snaps. The Buccaneers remained unbeaten at home this season at 5-0. Their dreams of another championship are intact. The postgame crankiness from their defeat at Washington, when Arians called his team “very dumb” and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/11/14/buccaneers-repeat-chances-tom-brady/" target=_blank>Brady instructed reporters to “make it quick,”</a> was all but forgotten.

“We played better,” Brady said. “It’s better for all of us when we play better.”

Another interception thrown by Daniel Jones resulted in another field goal for the Bucs.

Jones forced a pass into heavy traffic. The ball was tipped by Buccaneers linebacker Devin White and intercepted by safety Mike Edwards.

It was the second interception of the game thrown by Jones and the third turnover by the Giants.

That led to a 30-yard field goal by kicker Ryan Succop for the Buccaneers. (Buccaneers 30, Giants 10 with 7:44 left in the 4th quarter)

The Bucs converted an inexplicable interception thrown by the Giants’ Daniel Jones into a field goal.

Jones moved to his right and threw a pass back to the left side of the field.

But there was no Giants receiver particularly close. The pass went directly to Steve McLendon, the 310-pound veteran defensive tackle for the Buccaneers. He made his first NFL interception.

The Bucs took possession at the New York 37-yard line. They could advance only 15 yards before kicker Ryan Succop drilled a 40-yard field goal. (Buccaneers 27, Giants 10 with 3:53 left in the 3rd quarter)

The Buccaneers increased their lead as Tom Brady threw a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike Evans.

Evans found a spot in the end zone on a third-and-goal play and used his frame to shield a defender. Brady zipped an on-target throw.

It was the 72nd career touchdown for Evans, who surpassed Mike Alstott for the most in franchise history.

Brady spread the wealth in the passing game on this drive. He had a 17-yard completion to Evans on a third-and-11 play.

After a 29-yard gain by tailback Leonard Fournette on a screen pass was wiped out by an illegal-formation penalty, Brady had completions of 14 yards to tight end Rob Gronkowski and 18 yards to wideout Chris Godwin. (Buccaneers 24, Giants 10 with 7:31 left in the 3rd quarter)

The Giants failed on a fourth-and-one attempt from the Tampa 25-yard line.

Daniel Jones rolled to his right and tried to throw a pass. But he was pressured into an incompletion by Buccaneers linebacker Devin White.

Jones had a 28-yard completion to tight end Kyle Rudolph on the drive. (Buccaneers 17, Giants 10 with 12:22 left in the 3rd quarter)

New York Giants v Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers, trying to regain their championship form after two straight losses, lead the Giants, 17-10, at halftime on “Monday Night Football” at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Quarterback Tom Brady completed 20 of 29 first-half passes for 198 yards and a touchdown. He even had a 10-yard run on a scramble.

Brady was sharp at the outset, completing his first 10 passes. He threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Godwin on the Bucs’ opening possession. Tailback Ronald Jones provided a six-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and kicker Ryan Succop added a field goal.

But Brady also threw his fifth interception in the last three games. Wide receiver Mike Evans failed to corral a screen pass and Giants cornerback Adoree’ Jackson grabbed the ball on the deflection. That set up a gadget-play touchdown for the Giants, as left tackle Andrew Thomas reported as an eligible receiver and made a leaping catch in the end zone of a pass by Daniel Jones.

The Giants also got a field goal by kicker Graham Gano.

Jones completed 11 of 16 passes for 81 yards. Tailback Saquon Barkley had a quiet first half in his return from an ankle injury. He had 10 rushing yards on three carries and 16 receiving yards on three catches. (Buccaneers 17, Giants 10 at halftime)

The Buccaneers were frustrated on what may have been their final drive of the half. They reached the New York 35-yard line but the drive stalled there.

Wide receiver Breshad Perriman could not corral a pass from Tom Brady in the end zone. Then a 34-yard catch and run by wideout Chris Godwin to the 1-yard line was nullified by an offensive holding penalty. Coach Bruce Arians didn’t like the call but it seemed legitimate.

The Buccaneers punted after Brady threw a third-and-20 incompletion. (Buccaneers 17, Giants 10 with 43 seconds left in the 2nd quarter)

The Giants punted after a six-yard completion from Daniel Jones to wide receiver Kadarius Toney on a third-and-five play was overturned via the replay review. The ball was knocked from Toney’s grasp as he went out of bounds.

Earlier on the drive, the Giants tried a gadget-play pass from Toney to fellow wideout Darius Slayton.

The pass by Toney fell incomplete as Slayton and Buccaneers cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting got their feet tangled and Slayton tumbled to the ground. A penalty flag was thrown but the officials, after a short discussion, picked up the flag and said there was no pass interference penalty. (Buccaneers 17, Giants 10 with 3:25 left in the 2nd quarter)

The Buccaneers regrouped from their gaffe and reclaimed the lead with a six-yard touchdown run by tailback Ronald Jones.

Jones took a handoff from Tom Brady on a sweep to the left, found some running room on the perimeter of the New York defense and slipped into the front corner of the end zone.

Brady’s 12-yard completion to tight end Cameron Brate had given the Bucs a first down at the 6-yard line.

Brady had a 35-yard connection with tight end Rob Gronkowski earlier on the drive. (Buccaneers 17, Giants 10 with 5:06 left in the 2nd quarter)

The Giants got a touchdown on a trick-play pass to left tackle Andrew Thomas, cashing in on a tipped-ball interception thrown by Tom Brady.

The Giants had to move only five yards following the turnover.

On second down from the 2-yard line, Thomas reported as an eligible receiver and maneuvered into the end zone. Daniel Jones’s pass was high, but Thomas reached up and made the catch.

Thomas was activated from the injured reserve list earlier Monday.

Brady threw his fifth interception in the last three games.

He threw a quick screen pass to his left to wide receiver Mike Evans. But the ball bounced off Evans to cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, who made the grab on the carom. (Buccaneers 10, Giants 10 with 9:14 left in the 2nd quarter)

The Bucs moved down the field again but this time managed only a 25-yard field goal by kicker Ryan Succop.

An 18-play drive did not yield a touchdown.

The Buccaneers had a first down at the New York 10-yard line. After an incompletion and a three-yard run by tailback Leonard Fournette, they faced third and goal from the 7. Brady had plenty of time to throw but found no one open.

Brady completed his first 10 passes of the game before his initial incompletion. He’s now 12 for 16. He also had a 10-yard run on a scramble on this drive, ending with a slide. (Buccaneers 10, Giants 3 with 11:16 left in the 2nd quarter)

The Giants answered the Buccaneers’ early touchdown with a field goal.

Kicker Graham Gano connected from 37 yards.

The Giants moved the ball down the field nicely. Daniel Jones had a 12-yard completion to wide receiver Kenny Golladay. Jones found tight end Evan Engram for nine yards on third and four. The Giants picked up a first down on a defensive pass interference call on the Bucs on a third-and-six incompletion.

But in a too-familiar refrain for the Giants, they couldn’t reach the end zone and had to settle for a field goal. Jones missed a first-down throw. A false-start penalty pushed the Giants back. On third and 14, Jones had nowhere to go with the ball and threw an incompletion.

Tailback Saquon Barkley had 10 rushing yards on three opening-drive carries. (Buccaneers 7, Giants 3 with 4:04 left in the 1st quarter)

The Buccaneers went straight down the field on their opening possession and have the early lead on the Giants.

Tom Brady threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Godwin.

Brady flipped the ball to his right to Godwin on a wide receiver screen pass, and Godwin strolled easily into the end zone.

The Buccaneers moved 73 yards in eight plays and never even faced a third down. Brady completed all five of his passes for 49 yards. Godwin had two catches. Tailback Leonard Fournette and tight ends Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard had one catch each.

The Buccaneers will try to regroup for another potential Super Bowl run when they face the Giants in Tampa on “Monday Night Football.”

Tailback Saquon Barkley could return to the lineup after missing the past four games because of an ankle injury. That could provide some help for quarterback Daniel Jones, who has played better lately with four touchdown passes and only one interception over the last three games.
