Fernando Tatis Jr. suffers fractured wrist in offseason, could miss up to three months

The San Diego Padres will be without one of the game's brightest young stars to start the 2022 MLB season.

Team general manager A.J. Preller said Monday that Fernando Tatis Jr. suffered a fractured wrist during the offseason. The 23-year-old shortstop could miss up to three months, and the injury may require surgery. According to MLB.com, Preller said the fracture occurred to his left scaphoid bone and could have happened early in the offseason and began flaring up when he began swinging about a month ago.

"Nothing crazy, I thought it was something we could work through," Tatis told reporters, via MLB.com.

Tatis, who is undecided on surgery but said it was likely, said doctors told him he likely sustained the injury before the flare-up, per MLB.com. The two-time Silver Slugger was involved in a motorcycle accident in early December but said his wrist wasn't an issue in the aftermath.

"It's terrible," Tatis said. "I feel like everybody's disappointed, especially me. I feel like we have a pretty good chance this year as a team, and I just want to be out there for my teammates."

After making the playoffs in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, San Diego missed the playoffs last year and manager Jayce Tingler was replaced by Bob Melvin, who left the Oakland Athletics.

Tatis battled a left shoulder injury for nearly all of the 2021 season, injuring it on a swing on April 5, which resulted in the first of three stints on the 10-day injured list. That didn't stop Tatis from leading the National League in homers and playing in 130 games; he finished third in MVP voting, posted a .975 on-base-plus-slugging percentage and stole 25 bases.

Prior to last season, Tatis signed a 14-year, $340 million contract with San Diego
