Titans release WR Julio Jones after injury-plagued year in Tennessee
Julio Jones' tenure with the Tennessee Titans was quieter than expected. And now it's over.
The Titans released the future Hall of Fame wide receiver Thursday after a single injury-plagued season in Tennessee.
ESPN's Dianna Russini and Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that Jones would be released by the team.
The Titans acquired Jones from the Atlanta Falcons last season at significant expense, trading away a second-round and fourth-round pick for Jones and a sixth-rounder. The expectation was Jones, arguably the most consistently excellent receiver in football, would give the Titans yet another lethal weapon for an offense that already employed Derrick Henry and A.J. Brown.
That dream never quite materialized. The 33-year-old Jones got off to a decent start with 128 receiving yards in his second game, but a nagging hamstring injury caused him to miss seven games and limited him in a few others.
Jones finished the regular season with 31 receptions, 434 receiving yards and one touchdown on 48 targets. Each of those numbers represented career lows. The Titans still managed to grab the AFC's No. 1 seed, but lost a divisional round game in which Jones had 62 yards.
Rather than try out a second year, the Titans opted to cut Jones for $9.5 million in cap savings. His release will be official after June 1, according to Sports Illustrated's John Glennon.
