Formula 1 to run street race on Las Vegas strip in November 2023

There will be a third Formula 1 race in the United States in 2023.

F1 officially announced Wednesday night that Las Vegas will host a street race on the Saturday night after Thanksgiving. The 3.8-mile track will partially include the Las Vegas Strip.

The Las Vegas race joins the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of Americas in Austin and the new Miami Grand Prix on the F1 calendar in 2023. The Miami Grand Prix will run for the first time on May 8 and that track runs around the Dolphins' Hard Rock Stadium.

F1's expansion into the United States comes as the racing series is exploding in popularity among young adults in the country. Much of that popularity has been attributed to Netflix's "Drive to Survive," a docuseries that chronicles the inner workings of F1 drivers and teams.

The first two races of the 2022 season have drawn over 1 million viewers each on ESPN and F1 has drawn within striking distance of NASCAR in the adults 18-49 years old demographic. NASCAR's Cup Series maintains a significant viewer advantage over F1 thanks to adults 50 and over.

“Iconic Las Vegas and Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsport, is the perfect marriage of speed and glamour,” Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei said in a statement. “Our confidence in this unique opportunity is evident in our decision to assume the promoter role for the Las Vegas Grand Prix in partnership with Live Nation.

“We could not be more excited to work with our local partners to create a marquee event. The potential of Formula 1 has been well demonstrated over the last several seasons and the Las Vegas GP will only take it to the next level.”

The 2023 race in Las Vegas will be the third F1 race in the city. F1 previously raced in Las Vegas in 1981 and 1982.
