Reports: French soccer club Lyon demoted Marcelo for 'continuous farting' in dressing room

There’s now an explanation for why French soccer club Lyon demoted veteran fullback Marcelo to its reserve team earlier this season. And it’s a gas.

According to multiple reports, the 34-year-old Brazilian was dropped from the first team because of repeated instances of farting in the dressing room. Per ESPN, Marcelo was laughing during a speech captain Leo Dubois made following an early season loss. And he was accused of "continuous farting" in front of the team’s manager and sporting director.

From ESPN:

However, according to ESPN sources, Marcelo was also disciplined by the club for repeatedly farting among his teammates in the dressing room and laughing in the presence of [sporting director] Juninho and [manager] Peter Bosz.

Marcelo was considered one of the leaders of the team and had signed a new contract a few months before the start of the season, but the club described his actions after the Angers loss as "inappropriate behaviour."

What a ripe situation.

Marcelo played in just two Ligue 1 matches for Lyon this season in August before he was dropped to the reserve team in August. The team cut ties with him in January and he signed with Bordeaux. He’s appeared in 10 games for Bordeaux and the team has stunk with him in the lineup.

Bordeaux has lost eight of the 10 games Marcelo has played in and tied the other two. Bordeaux is at the bottom of Ligue 1 and at serious risk of being relegated to Ligue 2. The Girondins have just 27 points from 36 matches and are five points away from a chance at staying up in Ligue 1 with two games to go in the regular season.

Marcelo — not to be confused with Brazilian national team fullback Marcelo who currently plays for Real Madrid — has also played for PSV Eindhoven, Hannover 96 and Besiktas across his club soccer career. He made four appearances for the Brazilian Under-20 team in 2007.
