Best trade candidates still available

August 2nd, 2022

With tonight's 6 ET Trade Deadline fast approaching, here's a breakdown of the top trade candidates who remain available, as well as the biggest names who have already come off the board.

STILL AVAILABLE

Starting pitchers

Nathan Eovaldi, RHP, BOS: The veteran is in the final season of a four-year, $68 million contract.

Pablo López, RHP, MIA: Controllable through 2024, the Marlins may be open to trading the 26-year-old for the right price.

Martín Pérez, LHP, TEX: A first-time All-Star in 2022, the 31-year-old has had a career year after signing a one-year, $4 million deal with the Rangers.

Carlos Rodón, LHP, SF: With the ability to opt out of the final year on his two-year, $44 million contract this offseason, the lefty is a candidate to be dealt if San Francisco opts to sell.

Noah Syndergaard, RHP, LAA: Signed to a one-year, $21 million deal last offseason, the 29-year-old has had a solid season after missing nearly two years while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Relief pitchers

David Bednar, RHP, PIT: It would take a lot to get the All-Star closer, who is controllable through 2026, but Pittsburgh could deal him to take advantage of the demand for relievers.

Andrew Chafin, LHP, DET: The 32-year-old (2023 player option) has been traded prior to the Deadline in each of the past two years, and it could happen again in 2022.

Hitters

Willson Contreras, C, CHC: The Cubs traded a number of core veterans last summer, including Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Báez. The 30-year-old catcher's tenure with the North Siders is likely to end the same way, with free agency looming after the season.

Nelson Cruz, DH, WSH: The 42-year-old (signed to a one-year, $15 million deal with a 2023 mutual option) is having a down year, but a contender in need of right-handed power might take a chance on his track record.

Ian Happ, LF, CHC: A first-time All-Star in 2022, the switch-hitter is under control through 2023, but he's expected to be traded before the Deadline.

Ramón Laureano, CF, OAK: One of the only true center fielders available, the 28-year-old (controllable through 2024) is a candidate to be moved by the rebuilding A's.

J.D. Martinez, DH, BOS: The five-time All-Star slugger is in the final season of a five-year, $109.95 million deal with the Red Sox.

Whit Merrifield, 2B/OF, KC: He's having his worst season as a big leaguer, but with the Royals looking to the future, the 33-year-old could be traded, though he's signed through 2023.

Joc Pederson, LF, SF: Signed to a one-year, $7 million deal, the 30-year-old knows what it's like to be traded before the Deadline. It happened just last year, and he went on to win a World Series title with the Braves.

Bryan Reynolds, CF, PIT: It's going to take a lot to pry this switch-hitter from the Pirates. The 27-year-old is under team control through 2025.

Michael A. Taylor, CF, KC: Known more for his glove than his bat, the 31-year-old is in the first year of a two-year, $9 million deal.
