The Panthers announced that Baker Mayfield will be their starting quarterback for the 2022 season, and his wife is emotional.
On Monday, Emily Mayfield revealed she’s “feeling every single emotion” in a note posted to her Instagram Story.
“Moving is stressful,” Emily wrote, seemingly referring to the couple’s move from Cleveland to Charlotte after the Browns traded Mayfield the Panthers in July. “It’s a lot of tedious, quick decisions & nostalgic memories. Life is weird and it goes by so fast. It can also change in the blink of an eye.
“It’s all in God’s timing, and it’s super exciting, but also super scary and sometimes sad,” Emily continued. “Safe to say I’m feeling every single emotion today.”
The beauty influencer also reposted congratulatory messages about Mayfield’s quarterback news to her Instagram Story.
Mayfield won the starting job over former Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, who struggled in Carolina last year, throwing for nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 games.
“When we started this process, we were looking at three things,” Panthers coach Matt Rhule said Monday. “No. 1, mastery of the offense, No. 2, situational football excellence, and No. 3, moving the ball and getting guys involved. That’s been our focus all along.
“Baker has made a lot of improvement, a lot of growth in all three areas in a short amount of time.”
Mayfield will take the field as Carolina’s starting quarterback in the team’s third preseason game against Buffalo on Friday, Rhule said.
The Browns traded Mayfield to Carolina in early July in exchange for a 2024 conditional fifth-round draft pick. It came four months after the quarterback initially requested a trade out of Cleveland in March.
At the time, the Browns made a surprise play for his replacement in then-Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was recently handed down an 11-game suspension and $5 million fine last week following two dozen allegations of sexual misconduct by massage therapists.
Mayfield will face his former team when the Panthers host the Browns in Week 1.
