Champions League scores: Napoli and Bayern win big, VAR drama in Inter Milan-Barça, Liverpool and Brugge win

Bayern Munich started Champions League Matchday 3 off with a bang as they leaned on a Leroy Sane brace to a 5-0 win over Viktoria Plzen. The German side is in complete control of Group C with nine points from three matches while Inter Milan eked past Barcelona at home in the late window.

Sporting CP started brightly with a goal from Francisco Trincao in the opening minute, but a rash 10 minutes from keeper Antonio Adan saw Marseille take the match, 4-1. Adan cleared the ball into the path of Alexis Sanchez for the opener in the 13th minute before being dispossessed for Amine Harit's goal in the 16th minute. Adan would complete his hat trick of mistakes with a handball outside the box in the 23rd minute leading to his dismissal.

Napoli and Club Brugge stole the show in the late window. The Serie A side handed Ajax their worst European defeat thanks to a brace from Giacomo Raspadori. Dusan Tadic was sent off near the end of the match with a second yellow card which made things worse for Ajax, now on three points through three matches. With their next match being an away trip to Napoli, it won't get any easier either. With a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge have now won three consecutive Champions League matches for the first time in club history.

Barcelona's injuries caught up to them as they dropped an important match to Inter Milan. Hakan Calhanoglu scored a stunner before the end of the first half but Barcelona saw their equalizer chalked off. After Pedri scored, a handball from Ansu Fati saw the goal called off by VAR. Barcelona will now need help to qualify as Inter and Bayern are in the drivers seat in Group C.

Champions League: Matchday 3 results

Group A:
Ajax 1, Napoli 6
Liverpool 2, Rangers 0

Group B:
Club Brugge 2, Atletico Madrid 0
FC Porto 2, Bayer Leverkusen 0

Group C:
Bayern Munich 5,  Viktoria Plzen 0
Inter Milan 1, Barcelona 0

Group D:
Olympique de Marseille 4, Sporting CP 1
Eintracht Frankfurt 0, Tottenham Hotspur 0

Group D stands for disappointment

With six points in their first two matches, Sporting CP had an excellent chance to take control of the group with a win. Despite arriving late to the stadium and causing a delay, Sporting got off to a quick start with goal before the joy ultimately faded away. Sporting keeper Antonio Adan had a match to forget highlighted by his clearance into Alexis Sanchez's path for Marseille's opening goal only 13 minutes in. It went from bad to worse as he was red-carded minutes later, which paved the way for a comfortable Marseille victory.

Spurs also needed a result to rise from the glut of teams in the group, but missed chances were again the mane of the game. Since defeating Marseille, Spurs have only won one of their last four games in all competitions as Antonio Conte's side are struggling to score goals. Despite controlling possession against Eintracht Frankfurt, Spurs only placed two shots on target and picked up their fourth point in three matches. Still without Dejan Kulusevski, Conte will need to find a way to improve his team's attacking fortunes quickly before one of their opponents takes control of the group.

A match to forget for Antoine Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann got the chance to hear the opening whistle on the pitch as a starter for Atletico Madrid. Griezmann, who has been a super sub this season, saw his team take 20 shots with only five hitting the target. The Frenchman had the biggest chance of the match from the penalty spot. After Casper Nielsen brought down Matheus Cunha in the box, Griezmann stepped up and clattered his penalty off the bar before knocking a follow up into the back of the net, but from an offside position.

While it's a historic victory for Brugge, this is a dissipating result for an Atletico Madrid side sitting at the bottom of Group B on goal difference. With only one win in three matches, they'll need to pick up points sooner than later or run the risk of not even dropping down to the Europa League. Also struggling in La Liga with only four wins in seven matches played, these are the kinds of missteps that could see Diego Simione replaced.

Napoli cannot be stopped

The Serie A leaders are also sitting atop their Champions League group. Napoli are one of the few remaining undefeated sides in league and continental play, joining the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City. Napoli certainly aren't at the level of those two, but the gap could be closing right in front of us. Luciano Spaletti oversees a relentless attack that has scored multiple goals in eight of 11 matches this season with different players pacing the attack each time. It was Raspadori, who made the difference with a brace on Tuesday. Napoli have had four different players score braces in matches this season.

Even without Victor Osimehen, it's seems almost impossible to stop Napoli because every player on the pitch can hurt you. Just tell it to Ajax as they found out the hard way. With their strength in depth, players like Giovanni Simione can score three goals in all competitions playing mostly from the bench. If Spaletti can continue to keep his side balanced, this is a team no one will want to face in the knockout stages.

Oh Griezmann

After hitting his penalty kick off the crossbar Griezmann had a chance to score again but was judged to be offsides. It's still a comfortable lead for Brugge but they're a little lucky to not be behind.

Almost for Barcelona!

Pedri scores the goal as Onana left his net empty going for a punch. It was far too easy for Barcelona and it looked like the game would be level. But after the goal was reviewed for a hand ball the goal was disallowed.

Ajax fans are leaving

Napoli have scored five goals in an away Champions League match for the first time ever but this game is now 5-1 to Napoli. It took a while but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finally got a goal and was withdrawn with the result already assured.

What a sequence

After Porto thought they scored their goal was called back for a handball in the build up giving Leverkusen a penalty kick. But when Patrik Schick stepped up to take his kick Diogo Costa was stong in net to deny the chance. The match is now level heading to halftime after what was quite the first period of play.

Liverpool's attacking linuep is lively

Klopp's response to defensive concerns is to play Salah, Jota, Nunez, and Diaz in the same lineup. They're giving Rangers trouble to open the match and it likely won't be long before the Reds score a goal.

Picks

One matchup to watch: Robert Lewandowski vs. Milan Skriniar. From Inter's perspective, the Polish striker is the most dangerous man on the field to defend. This is an Inter side that desperately needs a positive result after losing Saturday against AS Roma at San Siro. Milan Skriniar is called to leave his mark after a negative start to the season as he faces one of the best strikers of the world. -- Francesco Porzio

Most likely to score a goal: Robert Lewandowski. Who else but Lewandowski? The former Bayern Munich player already scored three goals against Viktoria Plzen in the opening game of the group stage, but then failed to put his name in the scoresheet against his former club at the Allianz Arena. Tuesday's match at San Siro will be key to figure out the rest of the UCL campaign for both sides. -- Francesco Porzio

Man of the Match pick: Pedri. Inter Milan are expected to sit back on the defensive side of the pitch and rely more on counterattacks. That should pave the way for Pedri to be a crucial player given his role in the middle of the park and also because of the way Barcelona are expected to play. Inter Milan, on the other hand, will be without Marcelo Brozovic who is out injured and would have been on the same part of the field as Pedri. -- Francesco Porzio

Match prediction: Barcelona 2, Inter Milan 1. The Nerazzurri are going through a very difficult moment and lost back-to-back matches against Udinese and AS Roma. The pressure continues to grow on Simone Inzaghi and Tuesday's match against Barcelona might decide his imminent future. -- Francesco Porzio

Look out for Roberto Firmino

Defensively, Rangers have struggled since losing to Celtic in the Old Firm, which saw McGregor take charge between the sticks. While he had a strong performance in their 3-0 loss to Napoli, his central defenders haven't provided much help, so look for him to have a tough time trying to keep Firmino and Liverpool in check. Firmino has scored in three of the last four league matches that he has appeared in but still needs to open his account in Champions League play, this will be the match to do it

Could Spurs struggle in Germany?

James Benge thinks so in his Champions League bold predictions

After a bruising defeat in north London, Antonio Conte's side face another sort of challenge in Germany. Frankly it is one that they seem even less suited to than the derby. On Saturday, Spurs lined up with that familiar approach that they take against their biggest and best opponents: flood the box, ride their luck defensively and make the most of opportunities on the transition. It is, it should be noted, a more effective approach in practice than on paper and whilst it might demand eye of the needle passing and finishing they have Heung-min Son and Harry Kane. That is rather their modus operandi.

More challenging for Tottenham are opponents like Eintracht Frankfurt, the ones who don't want to assert their will on the contest but would prefer to see what Spurs can do when they are asked to set the tempo of the contest. Against Sporting, Conte's side had more of the ball in the most dangerous areas of the pitch but struggled to break down an obdurate home side who then hit them with a pair of late sucker punches. It is fair to wonder how different events might have been in the group stage opener if Chancel Mbemba hadn't been sent off for Marseille; indeed the only two shots Spurs had in that game were those from which Richarlison scored.

Europa League holders Eintracht Frankfurt will be perfectly willing to make Tottenham set the stage for Tuesday's game. By the breathless standards of the Bundesliga, this team is altogether more circumspect, ranking fourth from bottom in terms of passes allowed per defensive action (PPDA). It works for them. After all, it was the blueprint that took them past the likes of Barcelona and West Ham last season, when they seemed to relish their road games, and they have been no less circumspect early on in the Champions League. Indeed through the opening two games only Manchester City and Chelsea have allowed fewer shots on their goal than Oliver Glasner's side.

Can Barcelona withstand their injuries?

Xavi's side is expecting to keep control of the match despite some injuries that will force the manager to make some changes. During the International break there were some injuries such as defenders Ronald Araujo and Jules Koundé, midfielder Frenkie de Jong and striker Memphis Depay. All of them will miss the match against Inter Milan, while the attacking line should be composed of Raphinha, Ousmane Dembele and Robert Lewandowski.
