Whether it was Lance McCullers tipping his pitches or the home crowd firing them up, the Phillies bats roared to life on Tuesday.

In Game 3 against the Astros, the Phillies became the fourth team in history to hit five home runs in the World Series as they teed off on Houston's starting pitcher right out of the gate. Though McCullers settled in for a pair of hitless frames, they tagged him all over again in the fifth for two more homers as the Phillies routed the Astros in front of the Philadelphia crowd to take a 2-1 World Series lead.

The barrage of big flies began with, who else, but Bryce Harper, who hit the first pitch he saw from McCullers 402 feet to right field for a two-run home run in the first to give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead. Including his go-ahead blast in the eighth inning of the NLCS Game 5, he became the seventh player since 2000 to hit home runs on back-to-back pitches seen in his home ballpark, per Elias Sports.

Evidently, Harper must have picked up on something during his at-bat against McCullers. Before Alec Bohm batted to lead off the bottom of the second, Harper spoke with him at the dugout steps. The first pitch Bohm saw, he launched to left for a solo homer of his own. Brandon Marsh added another later in the frame to make it a 4-0 game after only two innings.

McCullers settled in and had back-to-back one-two-three innings in the third and fourth, but the game unraveled in the fifth. With one out and a runner on first, McCullers served up a moonshot to dead center off the bat of Kyle Schwarber to make it a 6-0 game. The next batter, Rhys Hoskins, teed off and sent one to left as McCullers became the first pitcher in MLB postseason history to allow five home runs in a single game, per Stathead.

Harper's home run would have been enough for the Phillies with the way Ranger Suarez and the Philadelphia bullpen pitched. Suarez gave the Phillies five shutout innings, scattering just three hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Connor Brogdon, Kyle Gibson, Nick Nelson and Andrew Bellatti combined to allow only four baserunners (two hits, two walks) the rest of the game as Houston's bats failed to get on the scoreboard for the first time in the playoffs since the Game 6 World Series-clinching 7-0 victory by the Braves in 2021.

8:24 p.m. End of First: Nick Castellanos grounds out to third, but the damage is done. The Phillies have a lead and the crowd is about as amped up as it gets.

8:22 p.m. Phillies scoring play: It's a storybook start for Harper. The first pitch he sees in Philadelphia in the World Series is launched 402 feet to right-center for a no-doubt, two-run blast. Phillies take a 2-0 lead.

8:05 p.m.: That will fire up the Philly crowd. First pitch of the game to Jose Altuve is lined to right, but Nick Castellanos makes a sliding grab for the first out. According to Baseball Savant, that ball had an expected batting average of .560.
