The biggest addition to MLS this season is not a player, coach or expansion club but the primary viewing platform. MLS is largely abandoning traditional TV for a streaming service, which means the days of turning to a regional sports network for match coverage are over.

To attract subscribers, MLS acknowledges the need to offer a more compelling product. While the regular season remains unchanged — there is no promotion-relegation, and a playoff berth is not hard to attain — a full-scale tournament with Mexican counterparts will become the summer centerpiece and require a pause to the normal schedule.
