Summary

Rodrygo scored twice at Stamford Bridge as Real Madrid beat Chelsea 2-0 for the second time in a week, advancing to the Champions League semi-finals by a 4-0 aggregate scoreline.

The Premier League side began the match brightly and were the better side for most of the first half. Big chances fell to N'Golo Kante and Marc Cucurella, but Kante missed the target before Thibaut Courtois made a brilliant save to deny Cucurella.

But the defending European champions asserted themselves in the second half, getting a pair of goals from Rodrygo to put the tie out of reach.

Real Madrid will face either Manchester City or Bayern Munich in the semi-final, with City the heavy favourite as they enter Wednesday's second leg with a 3-0 lead.

Lampard: 'I won't let anyone off the hook'

Frank Lampard had more to say to BT Sport after the loss, including what Chelsea have left to play for this season: "You're playing for Chelsea. So regardless, every game you play you have to give everything. I won't let anyone off the hook and we have to show. That standard cannot drop."

He also spoke about Eder Militao's foul on Trevoh Chalobah early in the second half, which Chelsea felt should have warranted a second yellow card for the defender. "Militao was a second yellow card. Normally a yellow, which means red and playing against them with 10 men like they had at the Bernabeu."

Ancelotti: 'Chelsea played really well'

Speaking to the media after his opposite number, Carlo Ancelotti echoed some of what Frank Lampard had to say.

"Chelsea played really well, we were prepared for it," the Real Madrid boss told BT Sport. "They created opportunities, we suffered a lot and Courtois helped (the scoreline) stay at 0-0 at the end of the first half and second half we were much better. We are happy to be qualified.

"We will try (for a 15th Champions League title) but we have another 180 minutes which will be so difficult, but we will try. We are happy to be there because it's not easy to be in the semi-final for another season and we will fight for the final."

Vinicius Jr is on fire

With his assist on Rodrygo's first goal tonight, Vinicius Junior has now been involved in 21 goals in his last 21 Champions League appearances, scoring 10 and assisting 11 in that time.

Since the start of last season, is the only player to reach double figures for both goals and assists in the competition.

Valverde gets the plaudits

Federico Valverde is UEFA's Man of the Match tonight after his brilliant assist for Rodrygo's second goal.

Lampard: 'We played really well for 60 minutes'

Frank Lampard was very candid in his assessment of the match, touching on his side's dominance but also their lack of a cutting edge in the final third.

"We played really well for 60 minutes," he told BT Sport. "After the goal to make it 3-0 in the tie, we made some changes to go for it and it's normal how the game pans out, to a degree. But, for 60 minutes, it's really good.

"We created really good chances which, at this level, you have to take. You don't want to praise the performance too much when you lose at this level because it's finite."

He was then asked whether he's worried about his side's lack of goals.

"It's clear, isn't it? It's not for the want of trying, we had a lot of numbers in the box, we got in loads of crossing positions so I'll never criticise the lads for that," he responded.

"If the tie went 2-1 at any point, you really would've felt the crowd turn and the way we were playing, we were moving the ball really well, we were giving them a lot of problems on the wings."

Real Madrid, kings of England

Real Madrid have now won their past six Champions League knockout matches, setting a new club record for a winning streak in the competition's knockout stages.

All six of those wins have come against English teams. Only Barcelona (seven in a row between 2014 and 2016) have had a longer winning run against English clubs.

Semi-finals are old hat

Real Madrid have reached the Champions League semi-finals for the 16th time, at least four more than any other team in the competition's history (Bayern Munich and Barcelona have each done so 12 times).

Historic power outage at the Bridge

Chelsea have now failed to score in 18 matches in all competitions in a season for the first time since 1980-81, when they were shut out in 21 games.

Ignominious history for Lampard

Ignominious history for Lampard

Frank Lampard has now lost the first four games of his second spell in charge of Chelsea, making him the first manager in the club's 118-year history to begin a stint with four straight defeats.

Regardless of manager, it's also the first time the team have lost four straight in all competitions since November 1993.

Gallagher: 'Football is all about taking your chances'

There were positives to take from a Chelsea perspective this evening but knockout football is exclusively about getting a positive result.

Gallagher admitted that he and his team-mates created enough chances to trouble Real Madrid but the quality in the two penalty areas made the difference.

"We played well, we had a lot of chances," the Chelsea midfielder told BT Sport. "We definitely had more, and better, chances than they did, but football is all about taking your chances and we didn't do that today which is disappointing.

"Of course we're gutted but we played some good stuff today. That (cutting edge) is what wins you games and we haven't got that at the minute.

"There was definitely a big improvement today on our recent performances, but you need to score goals to win games. They did that and we didn't."

Rodrygo: 'Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world'

Rodrygo has spoken to the media about his celebration of his first goal: “I first thought of sliding on my knees, but have a small inflammation (points to leg) and couldn't do that. So I thought of my idol, Cristiano, and I thought I’d do his celebration.

“Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world, and we always know we are almost obliged to reach the semis, to reach the final, and to win the Champions league. So we have that in our heads. We have to do it, play well, and I believe we have been doing that since I came here.”

A late goal for Napoli but AC Milan join Madrid in the semis!

An evening of drama in Naples has come to an end and AC Milan are into the semi-finals.

Victor Osimhen scored a late header for the Serie A leaders but it wasn't enough to topple their fellow Italians as Milan advance 2-1 on aggregate.

Considering Inter Milan are 2-0 up against Benfica in the other quarter-final on that side of the bracket, we could be set for an incredible Milan derby in the Champions League semi-final...

Season over for Chelsea?

With that defeat, have we seen the end of Chelsea's season?

They're 10 points behind seventh place in the Premier League and 17 from the top four.

Given how much money they spent in the summer and then in January, it's pretty embarrassing that their season is likely over with almost two weeks left in April.

Real have yet to be tested this season

Everyone at Madrid is obviously very happy to be back in the Champions League last four.

This year's progress is not nearly as exciting last year's though. It's been helped a lot by the rough seasons their two knockout opponents thus far - Liverpool and Chelsea - have been enduring.

Promising signs but no reward

Chelsea limited Benzema to just three shots before he was taken off, fewer than his number of clearances (four).

That illustrates how effective the hosts' formation was for the first hour of the game, forcing Real into their own box and limiting what they could create.

However, Chelsea's wasteful finishing was their undoing once again.

Unlike Real Madrid, whose incisiveness in the final third was the clear difference between the teams.

A typical Real Madrid performance in Europe

Real Madrid weren't at their best over these two legs, but are they ever at their best?

They always know how to get over the line in the Champions League, regardless of how well or poorly they play.

The current holders will likely be written off again heading into the semi-final against Manchester City (or possibly Bayern Munich), but they are the specialists at winning in this competition.
