When did Erling Haaland break Premier League goal record? Man City striker passes Shearer, Cole for all-time mark image

Erling Haaland's demolition of the Premier League has kept Manchester City in the running for a potential treble at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Norwegian international has enjoyed a sensational start to life in English football with 52 goals scored across all competitions.

Haaland showed no signs of slowing down in the final weeks of the season with the former Borussia Dortmund hotshot in line to smash some key records, and he indeed managed to smash the all-time Premier League goal scoring record.

The 22-year-old not only broke new ground for a 38-game season, but also passed the old marks for a 42-game campaign, cementing his season as an all-time performances.

When did Haaland break Premier League goal record?

Erling Haaland didn't just break the Premier League all-tie goal scoring record, he obliterated it. With five games to spare during the run-in, Haaland scored his 35th goal of the season against West Ham on May 3, setting the all-time modern Premier League record, breaking not just the 38-game season record but the 40-game record as well.

With that, the Norwegian passed both the 38-game mark of 33 goals by Mohamed Salah, and the 40-game record shared by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole of 34 goals.

Man City players gave Haaland a guard of honour on the Etihad Stadium field after beating West Ham 3-0 for his historic accomplishment.

Haaland's rate of 1.25 goals per Premier League game saw him set a new domestic benchmark, and he will now chase the 40-goal mark, which is well within his sights.

After their latest 3-0 win over Everton on May 14, in which Haaland scored, the Norwegian now sits on 36 league goals.

What was the previous Premier League record?

For the first three years of the Premier League's existence, 22 teams contested a 42-match league campaign.

Teddy Sheringham scored 22 goals to lead the league in the first season of the Premier League's existence, but that would soon be blown out of the water.

The next season, in 1993/94, Andy Cole of Newcastle United scored 34 goals, which sat as the Premier League record for goals in a season for nearly 30 years. It was equalled the following campaign, in 1994/95, by Alan Shearer of Blackburn Rovers. But both of those marks happened in a 42-match season.

Since, the Premier League has cut down to 20 teams and therefore 38 games. Until Haaland smashed the record, the previous leader was Mohamed Salah of Liverpool, who reached 32 goals in the 2017/18 season, coming just two short of tying the record set by Cole and Shearer. It's possible that had the season continued for four more matches, Salah would have equalled or broken the 34-goal record, but Haaland didn't need the extra time.

Premier League goal record in single season

Haaland's exploits are set to end with a new record in Premier League single season goal scoring, with Salah, Cole and Shearer all surpassed.
