Victor Wembanyama has dinner with Spurs legends Tim Duncan, David Robinson

The San Antonio Spurs did the inevitable last Thursday, selecting Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The French center joins an exclusive group of Spurs chosen with the top pick − Hall of Fame centers Tim Duncan and David Robinson. Duncan and Robinson have combined to win seven championships and three MVP awards, jumpstarting the 2000s Spurs dynasty.

Since Duncan retired in 2016, the Spurs have yet to reach the NBA Finals. They last time they made the playoffs was in 2019. Last season, San Antonio had its fewest wins since the 1996-97 season, a year that concluded in the Spurs selecting Duncan with the No. 1 pick.

San Antonio Spurs draft pick Victor Wembanyama holds a jersey along with general manager Brian Wright during a press conference at AT&T Center on Saturday.

Fast forward and now the pressure turns to 7-foot-4 Wembanyama.

Duncan and Robinson, along with franchise legends Sean Elliot and Manu Ginobili, met with Wembanyama for dinner on Friday night. Wembanyama shared a photo of the dinner on Twitter, captioning it: "Couldn’t ask for better role models 🖤"

The French center makes 7-foot-1 Robinson and 6-foot-11 Duncan look like small forwards, towering over the group. Ginobili, the shortest at 6-foot-6, joked he'd likely be the point guard in that starting five.

The dinner left Wembanyama full of information. Duncan shared his experience coming in as the No. 1 pick, looking up to Robinson. Wembanyama told local reporters on Saturday that he learned more about the NBA in those couple hours at dinner than in all his previous years.

"It's such comforting to see that these people who are so important to the city of San Antonio and to the franchise are such kind people and generous because they genuinely wanted to share with me their experience," he said. "I feel like they already started to take such great care of me."

For Wembanyama, there may be no better role models as he enters the league than those Spurs legends. Duncan and Robinson are big men who are familiar with the pressure of being the franchise player. Elliot, who was the No. 3 overall pick in 1989, and Ginobili know what it takes to win big and contribute as secondary stars.

No matter how Wembanyama's rookie season goes, he'll have a strong support system by his side.
