Former Iowa offensive lineman Cody Ince died on Saturday at his home in Grantsburg, Wisconsin.

Ince was 23, and no cause of death has been announced.

“I am incredibly sad to hear about Cody Ince’s sudden passing," Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement. "Cody was a tremendous young man, valued teammate, and contributor to our program. He loved football, fishing and hunting, and believed in the importance of family and friendships. Cody was just beginning this next chapter of his life and was about to be married.

"Mary and I are heartbroken for his fiancée, his family and all his friends who knew and loved him. All of us in the football program – his coaches and teammates – are mourning his loss.”

Ince played for the Hawkeyes from 2018-21, appearing in 29 games and starting 10.

Iowa junior offensive lineman Cody Ince (No. 73) protects the line as junior quarterback Spencer Petras throws a pass in the first quarter against Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021.

During the 2020 season, shortened because of the Coronavirus pandemic, Ince started the last six games and was named an honorable mention selection by the conference's coaches and media. During the 2021 season, he started an additional four games and retired due to injuries after graduating in 2022.

Survivors include his fiance, parents, and sister.
