Colts unveil alternate 'Indiana Nights' uniform with black helmet

The alternate uniforms for the Indianapolis Colts just dropped and — in one of the primary tweaks — the team is featuring an different color on the helmets.

On Thursday, the Colts posted a video that shared the uniforms on their Twitter account with receiver Alec Pierce and safety Rodney Thomas II wearing them. For the first time in team history, the Colts will wear a black helmet, which is different from its traditional white one with a blue horseshoe.

Called "Indiana Nights," the uniform will also feature blue jerseys and pants. For the first time in NFL history, however, a team will wear a heathered uniform, or one that has more than a single color in the thread that comprises the fabric of the jersey and pants. The two colors used in the pattern are different shades of blue.

The name of the uniform, along with the blue and black color scheme is inspired by the color of the night sky in Indiana.

In addition, the patches that team captains wear with feature "C" that is in the same font as the C of the Colts logo, with an outline of the state of Indiana set into the space of the letter.

The Colts will wear the uniforms October 22 during a Week 7 game against the Cleveland Browns at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The new uniform is just the latest in a series that NFL teams have unveiled recently, as the league has relaxed rules about having alternate helmets worn. On Tuesday, the Cleveland Browns revealed a white uniform that features white helmets and on Wednesday, the Seattle Seahawks unveiled popular throwbacks from the 1990s that showcase a silver helmet.
