Magic Johnson hints that Washington Commanders name may change at some point

Magic Johnson, a minority stakeholder in the Washington Commanders ownership group led by Josh Harris, says the name of the team "will come up eventually."

There is a chance the name "Washington Commanders" won't be around for long, according to Magic Johnson, a minority stakeholder in the ownership group led by Josh Harris.

Speaking on the "TODAY" show one day after the sale from previous owner Dan Snyder to Harris and his group, Johnson told Craig Melvin: "Everything’s on the table, right? Especially after this year. We'll see where we are with the name, but I can’t say that right now."

"We’re going to spend this year understanding what we have in place," Johnson added. "And then I’m sure that that’ll come up. The Commanders, the name of the team, will come up eventually. But right now, we got enough work to do that will keep us busy."

On Friday, Harris echoed a lot of what Johnson told NBC. He was asked about his own opinions regarding the name change and the new name itself. Harris responded by saying, “It’s not about how I feel, it’s about how the city feels about all of this stuff.”

“We’re going to look at everything and see where we are," Harris added.

After the sale was announced, Johnson wrote, in part, on Twitter "I can't believe it!"

"This is truly the biggest achievement in my business career and a historic moment for the entire Black community. Talk about God’s perfect timing," Johnson wrote. "This was the right organization for me to be a part of given its global appeal, history of winning, and the diverse fanbase and DMV community.

"I have a special relationship with the DMV. Many people don’t know I’ve done business in the Washington, DC area for many years. ... The DMV community has embraced and supported me, and I am honored and ecstatic to be a co-owner of the Commanders franchise!"
