Aaron Rodgers agrees to take massive pay cut for Jets

Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets have agreed to a new two-year contract that sees the quarterback take a substantial pay cut that should help the team build a team around him.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday evening that the Jets signed Rodgers to a new two-year contract that will come with $75 million in guaranteed money. That deal replaces his previous contract that he signed with Green Bay that would have paid him more than $110 million. That means Rodgers is taking roughly a $35 million pay cut.

This is significant because it gives the Jets some additional flexibility when it comes to building a team around their new franchise quarterback.

For Rodgers, the motivation is simple — he wants to win another Super Bowl to add to his Hall of Fame resume and knows that he needs as much help around him as possible. Especially on a New York team that has not made the playoffs in 12 years.

It also shows that Rodgers isn't just in this for a paycheck. These next two years are all about winning and doing whatever it takes for him to get that opportunity.

It is also a potential steal for the Jets.

If Rodgers performs like they think he can, he will be a bargain at that number. One of the most important aspects of building a Super Bowl-caliber roster in the modern NFL is having an elite quarterback who isn't making elite money. Tom Brady played on a below-market contract for the New England Patriots and allowed the team to add as much talent around him as possible. Patrick Mahomes is also making less than other top-tier passers. It's also why quarterbacks on rookie contracts tend to be the most valuable players in the league from a cap perspective.

Every dollar that is saved on the most important position is a dollar that can be allocated to other positions.

Now the Jets just simply need to put that extra cap room over the next two years to good use, and Rodgers needs to show that he can still be a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback. He did not play at that level a year ago and will be turning 40 years old in December. Even the great ones run into a wall at some point, and the Jets have to hope Rodgers has not yet reached that point.

Boston radio host shares bombshell report about Stefon Diggs

Stefon Diggs has drawn negative attention ahead of the start of his first mandatory minicamp with the New England Patriots, and some have wondered if his future with the team is in jeopardy. One longtime Boston radio host claims it is not out of the question. A video that circulated on Tuesday appears to show Diggs handing three women an unknown pink substance while partying on a yacht. On Friday, Scott Zolak of 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston's "Zolak and Bertrand" show was asked if he feels Diggs should be cut over the troubling video. Zolak, a former Patriots quarterback who has covered New England for years, said he believes Diggs should remain on the team. However, he said he has heard the Patriots moving on from Diggs before the season is "on the table." "Do I think he should be cut? No. I came to this show yesterday with the opinion, not the opinion, but the knowledge that it is on the table, that it is being thought of," Zolak said. "And it’s not just the boat. It’s not just the boat. There’s some other things that I’ve heard, that’s all, that put some things in question." Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5M contract with the Patriots in March. He is working his way back from a torn ACL that he suffered midway through his lone season with the Houston Texans last year. The Patriots are hoping Diggs will become the No. 1 wideout that their offense has lacked for years, but his tenure in New England is off to a rocky start. Head coach Mike Vrabel was asked about the yacht video on Wednesday, and he indicated that he is not thrilled with the situation. It is highly unlikely that the Patriots will move on from Diggs before he ever plays a snap for the team, but the fact that it is even a topic of discussion is not a good sign for the 31-year-old.

Reggie Miller Facing Backlash From NBA World During Knicks-Pacers Game

On Saturday night, the Indiana Pacers are playing the New York Knicks (at home) for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals. Pacers legend Reggie Miller is calling the game on TV for TNT. However, many fans were talking about the Hall of Fame guard on social media. Anthony Puccio: "I’m sorry but Reggie Miller should not be calling these games" Sam Morril: "Infuriating how much i’ve had to listen to Reggie Miller. One of the worst broadcasters to ever do it." @Matty_Ice42: "Reggie Miller and SVG should be absolutely ashamed of this performance on national tv" @NBA_NewYork: "Reggie Miller and Stan Van Gundy are vomit inducing tonight" @docKev_: "How Reggie Miller is allowed to be a broadcaster for this series is beyond me." @joelvmoran: "KAT looks like he’s in serious pain and Reggie Miller goes, “I think this is all for show” Get this biased Pacers fan off the mic" @BigKnickEnergy_: "I can’t even believe we listened to Reggie Miller and Stan Van Gundy for 6 games now" @AndrewLeezus: "Reggie Miller, a national tv broadcaster, is openly rooting for the Pacers and when KAT just grabbed his knee in pain he called it “all for show”. Dude is the worst." Miller spent his entire 18-year career with the Pacers. They last made the NBA Finals during the 2000 season (25 years ago) when he was on the roster. The winner of the series will face off against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2025 NBA Finals.

Brewers Still Reeling From Lopsided 2021 Trade With Tigers

The Milwaukee Brewers have been able to remain in contention despite some impactful losses. Even after trading players like Josh Hader, Devin Williams and Corbin Burnes, while also losing Willy Adames in free agency. They are currently 31-28 this season and sit within striking distance in the stronger-than-expected National League Central division. However, not every move made by the Brewers front office has panned out in recent years. The impact of some can still be felt in a negative way. In July 2021, they acquired Daniel Norris from the Detroit Tigers for Reese Olson. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report recently listed that trade as one the Brewers would like to have back. "Olson made his MLB debut roughly two years after this trade, and he has since developed into a staple in the Detroit rotation with a 3.60 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 255 strikeouts in 264.2 innings. The 25-year-old is controllable through the 2029 season and is off to a fantastic start this year with a 2.96 ERA and 2.93 FIP in 48.2 innings," Reuter writes. This trade ultimately worked out better for the Tigers. After joining the Brewers, Norris posted a 6.64 ERA in 18 appearances and was never the same afterwards. While the Brewers remain a contender, this is likely one trade that they would like to have back, as Olson has panned out quite nicely for the Tigers. The Brewers will be an interesting team to watch at the trade deadline. We'll see what happens this summer.

Boston Bruins could target Sabres emerging star as potential offer sheet candidate

With offseason flexibility, the Boston Bruins might use cap space to pursue RFA winger JJ Peterka as a creative way to boost their scoring and rebuild the top-six forward core. Bruins open to aggressive offseason strategy This summer feels different for the Boston Bruins. Not just because of the way last season ended, but because of the flexibility they finally have, cap space, options, and pressure to act. And with July 1 looming, the front office might shift away from its typical script. Rather than chasing aging unrestricted free agents, there’s growing chatter about a less traditional route: the offer sheet. And if that’s the move, JJ Peterka of the Buffalo Sabres fits the mold of a player worth targeting. Peterka emerging as a top-tier young winger There’s no denying Peterka’s upward trajectory. The 23-year-old put together a breakout year, posting 27 goals and 41 assists, both career high, for a total of 68 points. That followed a strong 28-goal campaign in 2022-23, which now looks less like a breakout and more like a baseline. The winger has a fast, attacking game and a goal-scorer’s mindset. He isn’t just padding stats, he’s making an impact every shift. He’s also versatile, capable of playing both wings, which is something the Bruins could benefit from in multiple lineup combinations. Why Boston and Peterka might be a perfect fit Scoring depth was a glaring issue for the Bruins this past season. With David Pastrnak carrying so much of the offensive load, the team often looked thin beyond the top line. Peterka’s pace, finish, and creativity could give Boston exactly what it’s been missing. He could slot in on the second line or potentially flank Pastrnak if the chemistry clicks. On the power play, he’s already shown the ability to create off the half wall and drive to the net, areas where Boston needs more consistency and danger. Buffalo’s cap situation could open the door Buffalo isn’t short on young talent, but that comes with challenges. Alongside Peterka, they need to re-sign Bowen Byram, Jack Quinn, Ryan McLeod, and Jacob Bernard-Docker, all of them pending RFAs. That’s a lot of money to stretch, even for a team with room to work. If Boston swoops in with a strong offer sheet, the Sabres may be forced to make a tough call. Losing Peterka would sting, but they might not be able to match if they want to keep the rest of their core intact. Trade talks aren’t off the table either It’s worth noting that Peterka was linked to trade rumors around the deadline. That leaves a second option on the board: Boston could approach Buffalo directly about a deal. It’d likely cost more in terms of assets, picks, prospects, or both, but it would bypass the offer sheet drama. Either path leads to the same destination: a 23-year-old winger entering his prime who could help push the Bruins back into contention.
