Report: Ravens CB Marlon Humphrey to have surgery for foot injury, miss first 2 games

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey is reportedly expected to miss time with a foot injury that he will have surgery for on Wednesday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.

The hope is that the 27-year-old will be back in a little over a month and miss only the first couple of games, per the report. In the meantime, the Ravens announced Thursday they had signed veteran cornerback Ronald Darby to a one-year deal to rebuild their depth.

Baltimore's preseason started with a 20-19 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday, but as a Pro Bowler in three of the past four seasons, Humphrey didn't take the field.

He reportedly missed training camp Wednesday. This came after he left practice Tuesday with a slight limp and still appeared for a news conference later that day.

Both days were joint practices with the Washington Commanders ahead of their upcoming preseason matchup in Maryland on Monday

“To me, this is actually kind of almost better than preseason,” Humphrey said Tuesday. “It’s much harder to tackle without going to the ground, and you’re covering elite guys every single play doing your one-on-ones. You’re put in good and bad positions, so I think for a lot of guys — me, Roquan [Smith], Marcus [Williams] — we’re kind of taking these days as they’re our two preseason games. [We don’t] know how much preseason action we’ll see. But I think joint practices, it’s some of the best you can really get.”

The former Crimson Tide star was selected by the Ravens in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and has been a core part of the team's defense since. Over six seasons and 90 career games, he's recorded 347 tackles, 281 solo, 15 for loss, 13 forced fumbles and 12 interceptions. He started all 17 games for the Ravens last season.

Humphrey is set to miss the Ravens' Week 1 matchup with the Houston Texans and also seems likely to remain sidelined for the team's division game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Without him, the team's other options at cornerback are also hampered by injury. Second-year cornerback Pepe Williams is undergoing a second surgery to his ankle that will delay his start to the season. Rock Ya-Sin, who has been out with a knee injury, is still week-to-week.

Second-year cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis is "really close" to returning, said head coach John Harbaugh, after an undisclosed injury kept him out of the preseason opener.
