Nick Kyrgios Says Tennis Career 'May Be Over' Amid Injury Woes

Tennis star Nick Kyrgios said Tuesday that his “time in the sport may be over,” an admission that he may never get back to the court amid his recent struggles with injury.

Kyrgios wrote a column for The Sydney Morning Herald in which he revealed that he’d sat down with his agent in recent days to discuss the reality that he may be approaching the end of his playing career. 

“The reality is, there is a part of me that knows my time in the sport may be over. And I’m OK with that,” wrote Kyrgios.

Kyrgios, who has been serving as a commentator for ESPN during the ongoing Australian Open and operates his own talk show, said that he’s “reached a point where life after tennis is a prospect that excites me.” 

“I could travel the world making really good money commentating on the sport, doing things like I am now with my talk show interviewing guys like Gordon Ramsay and Mike Tyson,” he said.

Kyrgios has been sidelined from tennis with a knee injury that’s been affecting him for a full year. His last match came during the Stuttgart Open in Germany in June of 2023, during which he was defeated in the round of 32. Prior to that, he’d not featured since the Japan Open in Oct. ‘22. 

“Even the players on the circuit would love to be doing what I am doing now... They don’t have the global reach that I do. Otherwise, they would be doing it too. Their entire world revolves around playing tennis, and that’s never been me,” added the Australian.

Although Kyrgios stopped short of calling it quits on his tennis career, he made clear that he’s at a crossroads, one which he’s not unwilling to explore.
