NBA Champion Rajon Rondo Arrested on Gun, Drug Charges in Indiana

Mike ChiariJan 30, 2024

Former NBA star Rajon Rondo was arrested Sunday in Indiana and charged with multiple misdemeanors following a traffic stop.

According to WDRB's Jason Riley, Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said Rondo was stopped for a traffic violation in Jackson County, Indiana, and was searched after a trooper smelled marijuana.

The trooper found a gun, a "personal use" amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, leading to Rondo's arrest.

Rondo, who is not permitted to be in possession of a firearm due to a no-contact order being taken out against him, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, drug paraphernalia and marijuana.

The 37-year-old immediately posted bond upon arriving at Jackson County Jail, and he was released from custody.

An emergency order of protection was taken out against Rondo in 2022 by a Louisville, Kentucky, woman after she alleged that he "became enraged" and threatened her life.

Following an argument with the woman and allegedly causing damage to her property, Rondo told her, "You're dead," per the woman. He is also said to have tapped on her window with a gun, frightening her and her children.

The emergency protection order was dismissed in June 2022, but a new one was agreed upon in August 2023, per Riley.

Rondo starred collegiately at Kentucky before going 21st overall in the 2006 NBA draft. He spent his first nine NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, earning four All-Star selections and winning an NBA championship.

He later went on to play for the Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers in an NBA career that spanned 16 seasons.

Rondo won a second NBA title with the Lakers in 2020 and last appeared in an NBA game with the Cavaliers in 2022.
