ESPN broadcaster discusses retirement rumors about Chiefs' Andy Reid

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio and ESPN's Adam Schefter raised eyebrows when they suggested in January that Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid could ride off into the sunset of retirement this winter if his club won Super Bowl LVIII.

Sean McDonough of ESPN attended this past Sunday's AFC Championship Game between the Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens and discussed the Reid situation during an appearance on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show."

"There was some talk about (the rumors), not a lot," McDonough explained, as shared by Robert O'Neill of Awful Announcing. "It certainly didn’t come across as imminent, but where there’s smoke, there’s fire, too. I trust Adam Schefter. It wouldn’t surprise me if Andy is considering it; I mean, he’s definitely toward the end of his career. I kinda believe in going out on top, so if he were to win and he was pondering it, I wonder if it might compel him to be more likely to retire and go out with a Super Bowl championship."

Reid turns 66 years old in March, has twice hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy since February 2020 and has already cemented his legacy as an all-time great NFL head coach.

As for who could replace him, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick seems likely to remain available through at least Feb. 11 and presumably would love to guide a championship-caliber roster considering he's 15 wins away from setting a new NFL record for career victories earned by a head coach (regular season and playoffs combined).

"Whether Bill winds up there or not, wow, that would be a lot," McDonough said about Belichick possibly taking Reid's current job later this month. "I would guess that would not happen, but Schefty’s plugged in, that’s for sure. So, who knows."

It's often said that nobody "wants to be the guy who replaces the guy" who is a franchise legend. Belichick is a six-time Super Bowl champion head coach and, thus, likely wouldn't feel the pressure that would come with filling Reid's shoes as would a young offensive coordinator.

One thing that seems certain is that whispers linking Belichick with the Chiefs will seemingly hover over the franchise through Super Bowl LVIII regardless of what Reid says about his future before the second Sunday of the month.

Packers Predicted to Trade for Two-Time Pro Bowl WR

While all eyes will soon be on the free agent market, set to begin March 12 in the NFL landscape, a couple of Pro Bowl stars could also be available via trade. Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf recently requested a trade after six years with the organization. During his time with the Seahawks, Metcalf has cemented himself as one of the top wide receivers in the NFL, posting five touchdowns and 992 yards on 66 receptions last season. As Metcalf and the Seahawks work to find the two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver a new home, a recent trade prediction by Garrett Podell at CBS Sports has Metcalf landing with the Green Bay Packers. Podell predicts Metcalf, who has one year remaining on his contract, will be paired with quarterback Jordan Love in the NFC. Metcalf would be joining an 11-7 squad that suffered a 22-10 loss to the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. Last season, Love recorded 25 touchdowns and 3,389 yards with a 63.1 completion percentage. Love had a solid year alongside a couple of quality pass-catchers in the receiving corps, including Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed and Christian Watson. As Podell explained, the Packers have the ability to use one of these names as a chess piece in a potential Metcalf trade.

Former NHLer sends warning to Senators fans amid Brady Tkachuk's reaction to anthem boos

Brady Tkachuk appeared clearly annoyed when Senators fans were booing the U.S. anthem, and former NHLer Ryan Whitney issued a warning to all of these fans. "Spittin' Chiclets" personality and host Ryan Whitney issued a warning to Senators' supporters that disrespecting the American national anthem could make captain Brady Tkachuk leave the team. Boos from Canadian hockey supporters to the U.S. anthem continued in the Canadian Tire Centre before Ottawa beat the San Jose Sharks 5-3 on Saturday. Tkachuk, who assisted Team USA in reaching the title game of the 4 Nations Face-Off, appeared visibly upset by the boos the anthem of his country received. In Whitney's view, this is an indication that things could go awry for Ottawa in the future in terms of keeping their American captain on their team. It's not just Canadians booing anthems, as it's happening across the league Anthem booing is a continuing saga in the NHL. American fans at Madison Square Garden last week paid their due "respects" to the Canadian anthem by booing it before the Rangers game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. This begs two questions. The first is, will Tkachuk want to leave Canada and go and play in the USA, and two, will the NHL decide to completely remove pregame anthems to avoid any potential further conflicts? It all remains to be seen.

Trade fate reportedly emerges for Sidney Crosby's longtime teammate

Pittsburgh Penguins reporter Josh Yohe revealed Bryan Rusts' trade fate ahead of tomorrow's trade deadline. Bryan Rust has been a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins his entire career. He first appeared in games with the team during the 2014-15 season, but didn't become a regular in the lineup until the following season, when he helped the team win the first of back-to-back Stanley Cups. Rust has overcome a lot of adversity in his career, including a speech impediment that he recently opened up about. Now the 32-year-old and the rest of his teammates are facing collective adversity as they approach the trade deadline in last place in the Metro Division. Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has already been working the phones, as he has made two trades, including one involving Michael Bunting. It is very likely that we will see Dubas make more moves in the next 24 hours, but could Rust be one of those players that gets dealt? It is certainly possible, but according to Penguins team reporter Josh Yohe, it may be unlikely as he believes Rust will finish his career alongside Sidney Crosby in Pittsburgh. However, he did admit that there is interest in him from around the league. The Penguins have received phone calls about him, though. He's a player whom many contenders would love to add to their lineups. It will be interesting to see what happens with Rust moving forward, as he will lose his control come July. It wouldn't surprise me, however, if they never trade Rust. He could be the last of Crosby's teammates still with him in Pittsburgh when Crosby's career ends. - Josh Yohe (via The Athletic)

Raiders still have big QB questions even after Geno Smith trade

The Las Vegas Raiders were one of the teams most in need of a quarterback heading into the 2025 offseason, and they are working to fill that gap by striking a trade with the Seattle Seahawks for Geno Smith on Friday night. In exchange for Smith, the Raiders are sending a third-round draft pick back to Seattle. In the short term, it makes sense for the Raiders. Smith is a clear upgrade over what they had at the position, and he has a history with new head coach Pete Carroll. That's the good news. The bad news is it still leaves the Raiders with some serious long-term question marks at the position, and that will be the case whether they re-sign Smith beyond this season or not. Signing him or not signing can both create its own set of issues. Let's start with the harsh reality that while Smith is a clear upgrade over the Gardner Minshew-Aidan O'Connell duo the Raiders were using a year ago, he is a step below the top-tier quarterbacks in the NFL. Smith is good. Maybe even, at times, very good. He did a solid job resurrecting his career in Seattle after being a backup for most of his career and turning himself into an above-average starter. The Raiders are not an above-average quarterback away from contending. However, their lineup has significant holes, and Smith might not be enough to fill all or even some of them. With a better supporting cast than he will have in Las Vegas, the Seahawks have been only a nine-win team the past two seasons. Suppose they re-sign him, which they are reportedly interested in doing to make him their quarterback of the future. In that case, they might be looking at a contract north of $40 million, given the going rate of starting quarterback contracts in the NFL. That would be a big chunk of money for a quarterback that might not be a player that can get them closer to contention. It could also be a detriment to their long-term salary cap. Even after acquiring Smith, and if they get him signed to a long-term deal, could they figure out a way to come away with a young quarterback like Shedeur Sanders or Jaxson Dart in the draft? It would not be unusual for a team to invest in a veteran QB while bringing in a top young quarterback. The Atlanta Falcons did that a year ago when they signed Kirk Cousins in free agency and still drafted Michael Penix Jr. with a top-10 pick. The Raiders have the No. 6 pick in this year's draft and could be in a position to draft Sanders or perhaps move back in the draft and position themselves for Sanders if he slides down the board or Dart. Given that both quarterbacks would probably be longer-term projects, having a veteran who could start ahead of them might make sense for at least a season or two. In the short term, sure, the Raiders did get better. Whether or not they are good enough to compete for a playoff spot or if they have solved their quarterback issue remains to be seen.
