It's been a long time, 23 years to be exact, since the United States Women's national team lost a home game against a Concacaf opponent, but on Monday night that streak came to an end. The USWNT fell to Mexico 2-0 on Monday in the final match of the W Gold Cup group stage. The loss snaps an 80-match unbeaten streak at home against Concacaf sides with the last loss being a 3-1 defeat to Canada in November 2000. It was the first loss for the USWNT against Mexico since 2010.

A brilliant solo effort from Lizbeth Ovalle led to the winner as the Tigres Femenil talent lofted a fine ball from the top of the box into the far side of the goal, catching Alyssa Naeher off her line in the first half.

Ovalle's goal ended a run of 33 straight shutouts for the USWNT in Concacaf competition, per Opta.

Mayra Pelayo-Bernal then made it 2-0 in added time to complete the convincing victory with a brilliant curling goal.

The U.S. put just one of their eight shots on target after scoring nine goals combined in the first two games.

"We have to turn it around, we have to pick our heads back up and know that this wasn't nearly our best, and when we are our best, we can play and compete and beat anyone," USWNT striker Alex Morgan said after the game.

The Americans finish second in Group A with this result and will play in the knockout stage starting this weekend against a team yet to be determined.

USA lead CBS Power Rankings

There's no doubt that the Stars and Stripes were favorites heading into the tournament and they're living up to the hype. Mexico are among the top teams as well. Make sure to check out where they ranked, here's what we had to say about them after their recent victory:

They had a huge missed opportunity from the penalty spot against Argentina and were forced out of their game plan during physical moments. They turned things around against Dominican Republic and racked up the goals they needed to take a step closer to knockouts.

What's at stake?

In our USWNT vs. Mexico preview, Pardeep Cattry helps break down what at stake in tonight's match:

The main thing to keep an eye on during the group stage finale will be goal difference. The USWNT could be one of three group winners that win all of their matches, and considering the teams that advance will be ranked based on their point totals before placing them in the quarterfinals, the first tiebreaker of goal difference will be crucial. The USWNT have the best goal difference in the competition right now with plus-nine and are expected to add to that count which could be bad news for Mexico, but even if they lose and Argentina win, Argentina will need to overcome a goal difference gap of 12 to overtake them in second.

How they got here

The Americans have been dominant thus far, defeating the Dominican Republic 5-0 and Argentina 4-0 to clinch a spot in the knockout rounds already. They enter the matchup atop Group A with six points and a goal differential of nine. Mexico, however, can make a push for the top spot in the group with a win. They sit in second with four points after settling for a scoreless draw with Argentina, but then routing the Dominican Republic 8-0.
