San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is preparing to enter his third NFL season, meaning that he will be eligible for a contract extension next offseason.
While that is still fairly far off, the 49ers are already thinking about it.
San Francisco CEO Jed York spoke about Purdy’s contract status this week and understands that the team will have to pay big in order to keep Purdy long term.
“It’s a good problem when your quarterback is one of the highest-paid guys on your team and in the league,” via Cam Inman of The Mercury News.
With the going rate for quarterbacks in today’s market, Purdy is certainly due for a huge pay day.
“It’s what the market is,” York continued. “Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before. I don’t know how many players are making over $40 million (annually) as a quarterback right now.”
Actually, there are 12 of them, and four of them even make $50 million. Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller Joe Burrow leads the way at $55 million per year.
But York isn’t afraid to pay top dollar for a signal-caller, citing February 2018 when the Niners signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million extension.
“When we signed Jimmy several years ago, it was the largest deal in the history of the NFL, for three minutes,” York said. “But Jimmy was at ($27.5 million). That’s what the market is, and you have to accept the reality of the world. To me, the quarterback is the most important position not just in football, but all of sports, and those guys should be paid a lot of money.”
Purdy is coming off of a terrific 2023 campaign in which he threw for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 69.4 percent of his passes and posting a league-high passer rating of 113. He made the Pro Bowl and finished fourth in MVP voting as a result.
Most importantly, Purdy took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
It’s looking like Brock Purdy will be under center in the Bay for a long, long time.

It seems Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss is continuing to solidify himself as the third-best quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. In his latest mock draft, Athlon Sports' Luke Easterling has the Los Angeles Rams selecting Dart with pick No. 26. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns take Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders with pick No. 2, and the Tennessee Titans choose Miami QB Cam Ward with pick No. 1. Dart could continue to climb draft boards after he impressed a scouting director at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis this past weekend. In a story published Monday night, the talent evaluator told Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz that Dart reminds him of Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix. "He actually reminds me a bit of Bo Nix last year," the scout said. "We've seen a lot of him at the college level, but we've also seen a lot of improvement. This is not the same player we saw three years ago at USC; just like Nix was not the same player we saw at Oregon that we saw at Auburn." In 2022, Nix transferred from Auburn to Oregon, where his accuracy improved significantly. In his first three seasons with the Tigers, he completed 59.4% of his passes. In two seasons with the Ducks, he completed 74.9% of his passes. After playing with USC for one season, Dart transferred to Ole Miss in 2022. In three seasons with the Rebels, he broke two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning's school record for passing yards (10,617). Nix finished third in 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year voting behind Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers and Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels. Time will tell if Dart finds similar success to that of Nix as a rookie. The draft is scheduled for April 24-26 in Green Bay.
We have some news regarding the trade made between the Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils involving goaltender Jake Allen. In the past few hours, the Devils announced the return of their top goaltender, Jacob Markstrom, who has just recovered from a serious injury. This return to play has an impact on Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, due to a clause inserted in the Allen trade that was concluded between the two teams a year ago. Let's recall that the Canadiens will acquire a pick from New Jersey in anticipation of the 2025 draft because of the trade involving Allen, but it is still unclear whether this acquisition will be a third-round pick or a second-round pick. It's worth noting that if Allen plays 40 games this season, Montreal will secure a second-round pick for the draft in June. With Markstrom's serious injury, it seemed possible. This announcement brings the Canadiens closer to receiving the Devils' third-round pick in June, rather than their second-round pick. This slightly alters the trade. Allen has now played 23 games during Markstrom's injury, and unless there's a huge surprise, this now seems to settle the matter for this trade.
The Dallas Mavericks were dealt a brutal injury blow during Monday night's 122-98 loss to Sacramento Kings as Kyrie Irving left the game with a concerning left knee sprain in the first quarter. Irving's left knee buckled on a drive to the basket and he crumpled to the floor in obvious pain. He was helped to the line by injured center Anthony Davis and a Mavericks staff member, knocking down both of his free throw attempts before leaving the court for the remainder of the game. The NBA world is concerned for Irving, who's been excellent in his 2024-25 season with the Mavericks. Irving's former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate LeBron James took to social media with a message of support after this injury scare. "Prayers sent up to Ky," James wrote on X. Irving is averaging 25.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game through 49 contests with the Mavericks so far this season. In a loss to James, Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb 25, the Dallas point guard recorded a game-high 35 points. "Just unlucky. I hope that he's healthy and it's not serious," Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said of Irving's injury after the game. "The injuries that we've had this season, guys are trying to hold it together to get other bodies back. And it just seems every time we're getting close to getting somebody back, someone goes down. We're running out of bodies here, but guys keep fighting." The Mavericks will face off against the Milwaukee Bucks in their next matchup on Wednesday night. James and the Lakers will look to continue their impressive 2024-25 campaign in a matchup against New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday.
With only four days left until the National Hockey League's trade deadline for the 2024-25 season, a new name has emerged as a possibility for Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks. During the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada this past weekend, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Vancouver Canucks are looking to add a forward to their NHL roster and there are numerous options available to them leading up to the deadline on Friday. Vancouver Canucks linked to former first-round pick Alex Tuch In an article on The Fourth Period last night where they took a look at forward options for the Vancouver Canucks, the team was linked to former first-round pick Alex Tuch of the Buffalo Sabres, who's in the midst of his third straight 20+ goal campaign. 'It is unclear whom the Canucks may be targeting, but the team has been linked to such players as Dylan Cozens and Alex Tuch of the Buffalo Sabres, Jared McCann of the Seattle Kraken and Trent Frederic of the Boston Bruins, among others, although Frederic is playing on an expiring contract.' Tuch, 28, would bring plenty of experience, including 66 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and scoring prowess to the Vancouver Canucks lineup, likely in a second line role. The Syracuse, New York native also has some snarl to his game as he isn't afraid to throw a big hit or drop the mitts to swing the momentum back into his team's favour. That's exactly what the Vancouver Canucks need right now, especially after Kevin Bieksa said on Saturday night that they're not a hard team to play against. 'It's not a hard team to play against right now. You look at their coaching staff with Tocc and Footer - who had a ton of bite - and it's hard right now, when you have a team with some good players but not a lot of bite. Got a lot of stick checkers out there.' Bieksa said. Tuch has one year remaining on his contract following the 2024-25 campaign with a cap hit of $4.75 million, which is more than manageable for Patrik Allvin and the Canucks with the league's salary cap increasing to $95.5 million USD. The cost to acquire Alex Tuch might be high and there isn't much of a rush on the Buffalo Sabres' side of things to move him by Friday as this could get punted to the summer or even next season's trade deadline.
