49ers’ Executive Speaks On Brock Purdy’s Contract Status
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is preparing to enter his third NFL season, meaning that he will be eligible for a contract extension next offseason.

While that is still fairly far off, the 49ers are already thinking about it.

San Francisco CEO Jed York spoke about Purdy’s contract status this week and understands that the team will have to pay big in order to keep Purdy long term.

“It’s a good problem when your quarterback is one of the highest-paid guys on your team and in the league,” via Cam Inman of The Mercury News.

With the going rate for quarterbacks in today’s market, Purdy is certainly due for a huge pay day.

“It’s what the market is,” York continued. “Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before. I don’t know how many players are making over $40 million (annually) as a quarterback right now.”

Actually, there are 12 of them, and four of them even make $50 million. Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller Joe Burrow leads the way at $55 million per year.

But York isn’t afraid to pay top dollar for a signal-caller, citing February 2018 when the Niners signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million extension.

“When we signed Jimmy several years ago, it was the largest deal in the history of the NFL, for three minutes,” York said. “But Jimmy was at ($27.5 million). That’s what the market is, and you have to accept the reality of the world. To me, the quarterback is the most important position not just in football, but all of sports, and those guys should be paid a lot of money.”

Purdy is coming off of a terrific 2023 campaign in which he threw for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 69.4 percent of his passes and posting a league-high passer rating of 113. He made the Pro Bowl and finished fourth in MVP voting as a result.

Most importantly, Purdy took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s looking like Brock Purdy will be under center in the Bay for a long, long time.

Giants Could Sign First-Round Corner in Free Agency

It isn’t hyperbolic to suggest that if the New York Giants cannot improve their secondary in the offseason, the rest of their moves will not matter. Between corners Deonte Banks, Adoree’ Jackson, Cor’Dale Flott, and a host of rotational defensive backs, the Giants struggled mightily on the boundary. It seemed like every top receiver had their way with Banks, particularly in the red zone, and there was no reinforcement to take the pressure off of him. As effort inconsistencies amplified his poor second season, it became clear a new top corner would be a necessary addition in the spring. Fortunately for general manager Joe Schoen, plenty of quality veteran options are available on the open market. Subsequently, the Giants could be interested in signing first-round cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. in free agency. Murphy, coming off a strong year in a dynamic Minnesota Vikings defense, is ESPN’s 20th-ranked free agent entering the new league year. “Murphy's six interceptions tied for the third most in the league, and he has 14 over his six-year career,” Matt Bowen wrote. “With the ability to play on the perimeter or in the slot (259 snaps in 2024), Murphy has the backfield vision and short-area speed to close on the ball.” He does his best work in zone coverage and set a career-high in interceptions (six) on his way to his first career Pro Bowl in 2024. He benefited from the rampant pressure of Brian Flores’ Minnesota defense but could find himself in a similar position if the Giants’ pass rush lives up to expectations. “Sources say Murphy will be looking for a rather large raise from the two-year, $17.5 million deal he just played out in Minnesota,” Jeremy Fowler added. “He has played his way into bigger money.” With his next contract likely landing between $15-20 million on an annual basis, New York has the room to add a top-flight corner and the pressing need pushing them closer to a splash in free agency. Murphy may not be the corner of Schoen’s choosing, but from a need and scheme perspective, he makes a good amount of sense.

All Signs Point to Buffalo Sabres Star Alex Tuch Possibly Being Dealt to the Vancouver Canucks at Deadline

With only four days left until the National Hockey League's trade deadline for the 2024-25 season, a new name has emerged as a possibility for Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks. During the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada this past weekend, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Vancouver Canucks are looking to add a forward to their NHL roster and there are numerous options available to them leading up to the deadline on Friday. Vancouver Canucks linked to former first-round pick Alex Tuch In an article on The Fourth Period last night where they took a look at forward options for the Vancouver Canucks, the team was linked to former first-round pick Alex Tuch of the Buffalo Sabres, who's in the midst of his third straight 20+ goal campaign. 'It is unclear whom the Canucks may be targeting, but the team has been linked to such players as Dylan Cozens and Alex Tuch of the Buffalo Sabres, Jared McCann of the Seattle Kraken and Trent Frederic of the Boston Bruins, among others, although Frederic is playing on an expiring contract.' Tuch, 28, would bring plenty of experience, including 66 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and scoring prowess to the Vancouver Canucks lineup, likely in a second line role. The Syracuse, New York native also has some snarl to his game as he isn't afraid to throw a big hit or drop the mitts to swing the momentum back into his team's favour. That's exactly what the Vancouver Canucks need right now, especially after Kevin Bieksa said on Saturday night that they're not a hard team to play against. 'It's not a hard team to play against right now. You look at their coaching staff with Tocc and Footer - who had a ton of bite - and it's hard right now, when you have a team with some good players but not a lot of bite. Got a lot of stick checkers out there.' Bieksa said. Tuch has one year remaining on his contract following the 2024-25 campaign with a cap hit of $4.75 million, which is more than manageable for Patrik Allvin and the Canucks with the league's salary cap increasing to $95.5 million USD. The cost to acquire Alex Tuch might be high and there isn't much of a rush on the Buffalo Sabres' side of things to move him by Friday as this could get punted to the summer or even next season's trade deadline. Former Canuck Kevin Bieksa has some choice words for Vancouver following loss

Former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa called out the team following their 6-3 loss to the Seattle Kraken on "Hockey Night in Canada." The Vancouver Canucks wrapped up their five-game road trip on Saturday night with a stop in Seattle, and while the result wasn't what they hoped for, captain Quinn Hughes "tweaked something", according to Rick Tocchet, which forced him to sit out the final nine minutes of the third period. Kevin Bieksa has strong words for Vancouver Canucks on Hockey Night in Canada Rick Tocchet's group won just one game on their five-game road trip, which came in overtime on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings, with losses coming against Vegas, Utah, Anaheim and Seattle, with the latter three teams below them in the Western Conference wild-card race. Following the loss to Seattle, former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa didn't mince his words when talking about the team's play lately and how they're not a hard group to play against. The Canucks should take a look at Kiefer Sherwood, for example, and how he brings physicality to the lineup and is hard to play against. He is well on his way to set a new NHL single-season hits record before the 2024-25 campaign ends. Jake DeBrusk, Conor Garland and Dakota Joshua are three guys who are quite good in their respective roles and have a bit of snarl to their game, but they're players you need to rely on as well to bring that physicality night in, night out. We'll have to wait and see if the Canucks respond in a positive way to Bieksa's comments with hopefully a physical and aggressive performance when they host the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night at Rogers Arena.

Leafs President Brendan Shanahan's Recent Actions May Indicate the Trade of a Top Prospect

Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan was spotted watching two of the Leafs' top prospects on Sunday in person, increasing speculation that one will be traded. There are five days until the NHL's trade deadline and while Atlantic Division rivals are taking huge swings, Brad Treliving and the Leafs continue to weigh their options. Treliving plans on making a deal or two, it just may not be the blockbuster fans are hoping for. While the Leafs' GM has tried to temper expectations among the fan base, Sunday's OHL game between the London Knights and Oshawa Generals saw Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan in attendance to watch Ben Danford and Easton Cowan, leading to speculation that a sizeable trade is on its way. It was quite the showing in Shanahan's presence for the last two first-round picks of the Leafs, with the hard-hitting Danford registering an assist and the more offensively-inclined Cowan posting a hat-trick that included the overtime winner. Teams have been asking the Leafs about Cowan, Danford and other top prospects, but Treliving has been hesitant to include them in any deal thus far. As the pressure mounts internally and externally on Treliving, particularly with the East not having a clear-cut favourite, he may be more inclined to deal one of his prized assets to give the Leafs their best shot at advancing to the Conference Finals and perhaps even further for the first time in more than 20 years.
