Dodgers' Mookie Betts to Miss Time with Fractured Hand Injury; Won't Need Surgery

Doric SamJun 17, 2024

Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts will be out for "some time" after fracturing his hand when he was hit by a pitch during Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals, manager David Roberts told reporters.

Betts will not need surgery.

The Dodgers star exited the game after being hit in the left hand/wrist area by a pitch from Dan Altavilla in the seventh inning.

Betts was having a forgettable game, going 0-for-3 before his exit. Still, the Dodgers held a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of home runs by Shohei Ohtani and another solo blast by Freddie Freeman.

Starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow also tossed a gem, going seven innings while allowing three hits with nine strikeouts. Los Angeles is looking to secure the series win in the rubber match after losing 7-2 to Kansas City on Saturday.

Despite the tough outing on Sunday, Betts is still among the best players in the majors. Entering Sunday's game, he ranked fifth in MLB with a .307 batting average while adding 10 home runs and 40 RBI.

Thanks to Betts' strong play, the Dodgers rank first in the NL West with a 43-29 record. The team held a commanding 7.5-game lead over the second-place San Diego Padres entering Sunday.

With Betts out, the Dodgers will need the rest of their star-studded lineup—which includes Ohtani, Freeman, Teoscar Hernandez and Will Smith—to step up. Miguel Rojas is a serviceable backup at shortstop and would likely see more time in the field.

After their series against the Royals, the Dodgers will begin a four-game set against the Colorado Rockies on Monday.
