According to a release, "The series captures their battles on and off the court as they chase greatness, push through injuries, and balance the demands of family and legacy."

James' quest to stay healthy during his 21st season in the NBA will be spotlighted, as will Edwards' rise to superstardom over the last year. Butler and Sabonis led the Heat and Kings, respectively, through trying years that included trips to the play-in tournament, while Tatum ended the season by leading the Celtics to their 18th NBA championship in franchise history.

"Starting 5 delivers an unfiltered view of life at the pinnacle of professional basketball," the release stated.

The series will feature 10 45-minute episodes and is being produced in conjunction with James' digital video company UNINTERRUPTED. The company had previously worked with Netflix on multiple sports programming endeavors, including series covering Naomi Osaka, Neymar and the 2008 Team USA men's basketball team.

James' longtime friend and business partner Maverick Carter is one of the executive producers, as are President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and Peyton Manning. Starting 5 marks the second Netflix sports series that the Obamas have worked on through their Higher Ground production company following the Olympic men's basketball series that will premiere in 2025. Manning's Omaha Productions has previously worked with Netflix on programming like Quarterback and Receiver.

Netflix has made a deeper commitment to delivering compelling sports stories in recent years through programming like Quarterback, Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Simone Biles Rising, Full Swing and more. Sports fans who enjoyed those shows will surely have fun watching Starting 5 when it premieres this fall.
