After eight more games, the Women’s Sweet 16 is set! All top seeds advanced on Monday, but it wasn’t easy. Five of the eight games were decided by 10 points or less, but the game’s biggest stars came to play. Caitlin Clark dropped 32 points and helped Iowa survive a valiant effort from 8-seed West Virginia while simultaneously making more history — the most points by a women’s player in a single season (1,113 points). Paige Bueckers also notched 32 points as she led UConn to a narrow win over 6-seed Syracuse. Juju Watkins (USC), Mackenzie Holmes (Indiana) and Kiki Rice (UCLA) also carried their squads into the next round. And we’re one game away from an Iowa-LSU rematch in the Elite 8. Woo!

Fun Fact: The last time USC advanced to the Sweet 16, Cheryl Miller was coaching Lisa Leslie (1994).

Hawks Complete Historic 30-Point Comeback to End Celtics’ 9-Game Win Streak (120-118)

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the Atlanta Hawks rallied from DOWN THIRTY to stun the Celtics last night and end Boston’s nine-game win streak (120-118). The Celtics are far-and-away atop the Eastern Conference with wins in 20 of their last 22 before last night, so maybe this was a simple case of complacency. Boston went up by 30 with just under 4:30 left in the second quarter in Atlanta (68-38), but the Hawks did the unthinkable.

Even without All-Star Trae Young, the squadron of Dejounte Murray (19), Bogdan Bogdanovic (22), Vit Krejci (16) and De’Andre Hunter (24) went unconscious from 3 to spark the epic rally. Atlanta erased the bulk of the deficit in just the 3rd period alone, going on a 35-10 run and pulling within three before the start of the 4th. Down the stretch, Hunter hit a dagger with 9.2 seconds left, and Atlanta took down the No. 1 team with a piece of history. Jayson Tatum had 37 points for Boston, but this was a nightmarish collapse. The Hawks are clinging to the final playoff spot in the East.

Fun Fact: It’s only the sixth time in the last 25 years that a team has come back from 30 points or more (since the NBA began tracking such stats). It’s thought to be just the 10th time, ever.

Shohei Ohtani Speaks to Media, Attempts to Clear the Air About Gambling Debts & Interpreter's Theft

The MLB bombshell story that broke late last week left more questions than answers, and Shohei Ohtani stepped to the plate to provide those answers on Monday. The Dodgers’ superstar held an honest and heartfelt press conference yesterday where he told media that he never bet on sports or knowingly paid any gambling debts for his longtime friend and interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Ohtani insisted that his friend lied to him for years. He spoke for more than 10 minutes in an attempt to clear the air.

ICYMI: For any readers who missed last week, Mizuhara somehow used Ohtani’s bank accounts to cover $4.5 million in gambling debts to an illegal bookmaking operation in California. Due to the language barrier, a lot of head-scratching followed as the dots continue to get connected.
