Derik Queen’s Game-Winner for Maryland Caps Opening Weekend of March Madness
Still no overtimes, but we finally saw some fun finishes on Saturday and Sunday in the NCAA Tournament. Five games went down to the wire in the second round, but one shot ruled them all. If you didn’t catch it, we've got you. Derik Queen has entered the chat. Enjoy one of those legendary moments you'll be seeing forever in March Madness promos…
Best Moment: Derik Queen’s Game-Winner
#4 Maryland and #12 Colorado State produced the best game of the tournament on Sunday afternoon. Colorado State’s Jalen Lake hit a go-ahead 3 (71-70) with six seconds left, but Maryland’s star freshman Derik Queen hit an isolation runner off the glass at the buzzer. Cue Bill Raftery — “With a little kiss!” Terps win, 72-71. But did he travel?
Best Underdog: #10 Arkansas
Three double-digit seeds made it out of the first round, but only one earned a spot in the Sweet 16. John Calipari’s #10 Arkansas is the lone 'Cinderella' nominee after an upset of Rick Pitino and #2 St. John’s. Pitino benched his best player (RJ Luis) down the stretch.
Best Conference: SEC (7 Teams)
Even though the Big Ten was perfect through the first round (9-0), it’s the SEC with seven teams (and another record) in the Sweet 16. The conference had 14 total teams in the field, so half are still standing — Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Arkansas. The Big Ten (4) and Big 12 (4) combine for eight of the other Sweet 16 teams. Duke is the only ACC team still alive while the Big East and Mountain West are out.
